I'm not surprised, it was a long time ago and I'm sure a lot of water has since flowed under that bridge.

Re: Autumn colours

Another venue to consider for the south is Winkworth Arboretum

https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/win...orth-arboretum

One small advantage is it has a coffee shop, a disadvantage it is National Trust site. But the views are worth a visit in the Autumn.

So do we have a consensus on when yet?

Re: Autumn colours

I think that the only way to do this is for you to decide Ian. By all means take account of members comments so far but just go for dates and venues. I will add another comment though if you wanted to add in a Midlands'ish venue then Derbyshires Padley Gorge is pretty special on a sunny Autumn day.
Here's an example.

Re: Autumn colours

Another vote for Westonbirt from me, wonderful place and only 20 minutes from home. It does get very busy during the weekends during Autumn. One from a couple of years ago.

Looking at this one, taken on 9th October, it looks a bit early for Autumn at its best?

I'm thinking the second or third week of October for the South and a week later for the North?

I'm really not an expert, which is why I need help!

It was indeed early Ian - just a taster of what is there. the second or third week would be better but as I said, Westonbirt gets really busy at weekends around then (queues on the road to get in). I used to live in a small village about 4 miles away when I was kid and still remember the traffic (and the number of cars stopping to ask direction - pre-satnav days).

Re: Autumn colours

Are we going to plump for a day and week?

Early November suits me, preferably not a Wednesday ...

I think that's the wrong way round, Ian, autumn starts early in the north and gradually spreads south. Normally I would plan for autumn colours in the south for the last weekend of October or the first weekend of November, but following the hot, dry summer it could be earlier this year as the trees will be stressed.

Re: Autumn colours

OK, how about the 27/28th October for the South and the 20/21st for the North? (I got it the wrong way around earlier - it's the North that will start going Autumnal first, not the South, of course.

Personally I would prefer a week day...
