Thank you Nawty. I did order mine on pre-release so maybe it should go back.

It has been sent back via Clifton Cameras about two weeks ago. I haven't heard anything yet!

Re: Panasonic 100-400

Here are some images:

Common Darter Dragonfly and Its Hunting Perch

Darter Dragonflies (Sympetrum spp) like to find a high (up to about 6 feet above the ground) perch from which to look for flying insect prey, and to which they return to eat their catch. Sometimes they have two or three such perches on a given day but, on this occasion, this male kept to one. That was bad news aesthetically, as this rusty tip of an iron rod does nothing for the images. I have cropped as much of that out as I think valid.

I was positioned with a wooden trellis frame between myself and the perch. This permitted me to rest the camera on the woodwork, as the cost of being about twice the ideal distance from the subject. So all of the images have been cropped but half or a little more.

In the second image the Darter has caught a small fly, typical prey.

In the sixth image it was curling its abdomen down and forward. It did this only once during about half an hour and I don't know the function of the contortion.

The takeoffs were to fast to even see in the viewfinder and the return flights still a bit too fast to get an in-flight one which was sharp.

Olympus EM-1 (Aperture Priority), Panasonic 100 - 400 mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar at 400mm at f8 (first two images) or f10, sunlight, hand-held.

Yes pretty neat Harold. Did you crop any of those or are they all straight from the lens?

Thanks, both of you.

As I stated (3rd para), all were cropped.

Re: Panasonic 100-400

Hello All,

Just a quick question on this particular model of lens have the problem issues that were initially present in particular with the focusing, zoom etc been resolved on more recent stock?

It has been out a good while now 18 months at least, so I would like to think that any new stock is now issue free.

I read of some owners sending theirs back then being issued with replacements from Panasonic.

I was always put off buying one of these by the bad/mixed reports of what would be a superb lens for birding etc.

Re: Panasonic 100-400

Its a good lens...endof.

Not sure what its short comings were, but it certainly works for me. Very closeups can be tricky re focus and DOF, but then its designed for telephotos at 30 metres and anon. No expert but its my birding lens thru woods and wetlands………….

Thomas

Can't be that long before the Olympus 150-400 or whatever comes.

If you are not desperate maybe best wait to see if that is suitable (price etc.) before making your final decision. Just a thought.

Re: Panasonic 100-400

For the record, I bought mine 2nd hand from here about two to three years ago, or so. So I am certain the lens is of earlier stock, certainly not the last 18 months. Never any problem with focusing, nor zoom......

Keith are you sure an Oly version is coming out? I thought Olympus and Panasonic had an agreement not to directly copy each others lenses.

Simon has commented several times in the past & this is his comment about the coming gear here. https://www.43rumors.com/ft5-confirm...ent-4003857136
