Re: Anybody tried out windows 8 pro yet

I've been using Release Preview for a few months now. I can't really see any advantage over Windows 7 unless you have a touch screen computer (which I do). Don't think I'll be upgrading my non touchscreen laptop. I haven't actually installed the 'proper' Windows 8 yet though - will need to do so before January.

I haven't had any software problems with it apart from Kleopatra (PGP software) not working. But Lightroom, Elements 10 and Olympus Viewer 2 run fine.

Re: Anybody tried out windows 8 pro yet

I upgraded a non-touchscreen laptop to try it.

Functionally, I don't like the Metro smartphone type interface, but I suppose I could get used to it. I use the desktop interface all the time, which is pretty much identical to Win7.

It does seem to wake up from sleep mode pretty much instantly, I suspect a lot has gone on under the hood.

All in all it's not worth the upgrade for me.

Re: Anybody tried out windows 8 pro yet

Not tried it yet and don't think at this time I have any reason to as Win7 64bit runs very well on my desktop, rapid boot with my main SSD drive and it runs all photo editing software very quickly indeed.
I'm not exactly top spec with hardware either (Intel Core i7-2600 CPU running at 4GHz when fully throttled, 8GB RAM and twin Radeon 6870s in Crossfire).

Re: Anybody tried out windows 8 pro yet

I really like Win7 and find it very stable. I will take some persuading to "upgrade".

Re: Anybody tried out windows 8 pro yet

I do have a touch screen laptop running Win 7 and went for the upgrade in the hope of improving the touch screen use and also improving on battery life and start up - having got used to an Android tablet, the laptop was largely superfluous but I thought to give it a whirl before deciding to keep it or let it go.

While the upgrade ran ok, programs built for Win 7 or earlier do not seem to run any differently (no faster) - but it's a steep and somewhat irritating learning curve trying to find everything, and having to constantly adjust between the new Win8 interface and the old ways of actually using the program. As a simple example, sliding a finger on the screen to select a program is fine, but then inside the program it's back to using the stylus or very carefully using a fingertip or resorting to the mouse.

Big mistake I made though was to decide to use the "Refresh your PC without affecting your files" because things seemed a big sluggish - it might keep your files but it deletes all non-Windows 8 apps (programs to me), so am now in the middle of re-installing all of them. It's by no means a disaster to me (didn't have much on it) - but it seemed such an innocent option to use! Be warned!

All in all, Win8 might herald a new user interface, but without new apps, it's doubtful to me if there is any point and it's very tempting to simply go back to Win 7 via a backup.

Reminiscent of using MS-DOS programs in early versions of Windows, for those old enough to remember!

Re: Anybody tried out windows 8 pro yet

Oh yes, CP/M and then MP/M and remember DR-DOS and GEM?
Windows 0.95 was a bit iffy. but 1.0 was fairly solid

Windows 8 is apparently very much better for virtualisation, so a great developers tool when running multi-machine client server systems on your laptop

As a UI though, it sucks.
Windows 7 seems to be the last of the old desktop system.
Now Windows 8 only runs two applications in the UI, so you can copy and paste.
Everything else is likely to be tombstoned and resurrected as the OS or other apps demand resources.
Of course you only have one primary application in Windows 8 - so it's more like Microsoft Window

At least you're thinking of the Pro version. The WinRT surface is crippled, it doesn't even support non-metro desktop apps.

One OS to rule them all and in the darkness bind them ...

Did I see George 3 mentioned. I remember George 2, so bad that everything was run from the console rather than use the O/S.
