Does your camera have a certain perfume?

I've just done a test and I can immediately tell if I'm sniffing a film camera, especially if it has film loaded. Digital on the other hand ...well if sterile has a smell, that's how they smell.

Re: Does your camera have a certain perfume?

My film cameras smell as if they are covered with mould, as indeed they are.

Sorry Steve, I know you love film and everything related to it and that's fine, but as someone who made his living with this medium for over thirty years and now exclusively embraces digital for everything, paid or unpaid, by spouting guff like this you are running the risk of nobody taking seriously anything you say in future and that to me would be a shame as normally you come across as a very intelligent guy.{ I did check the date BTW in case of a wind up, wouldn't put it past you.} Regards, Ian W.

30+ years, I'm impressed, Ian!
It was said in jest, but I take your point.

Re: Does your camera have a certain perfume?

Ah, the great smell of Tri X. Hypo has a certain aroma too and stop bath is good to clear the nose. Developer has a more subtle bouquet though and needs years of experience to distinguish between Tetenal and Rodinol without looking at the label - but it's something that true officionados aspire to.

But as a digital guy, I eschew all this epistastic nonsense. My life's objective is to know whether I'm holding an Olympus camera or a Sony by the sound of the IBIS.

After many studio shoots, most of my kit smells like it does when you walk through the perfume department or worse, Lush...

My 60s Zenit smelled like bread. I think it was the tanning of the leather case.

Re: Does your camera have a certain perfume?

I just did a quick check

My E-500 now smells of grease and diesel as it's the one i use when taking pictures when working on my old land Rover

My E-510 now smells of cave mud

The E-30 is pretty much OK with some light sand scrubbing from use in deserts, but no real smell

The Em1-II - still nice and clean

Regards
Andy

Your post brought back many childhood memories of the smells of the chemicals in my Father's darkroom and also the linseed oil smell from when he hand-tinted prints. I have his old Rolleiflex and other items, and they have a rather musty smell of age. Yes, I think it is distinctive.

Whoa hold on there,
Ricoh is absolutely right in that
film cameras smell of stuff and digital cameras don't.

I put it down to the absence of film, and the presence of plenty of bare metal.

If my digital cameras start to smell I guess something's getting way too hot in there!

Re: Does your camera have a certain perfume?

Digital cameras are not in use long enough to develop the smell of ownership, a film camera is used and held for so long that there is a transfer of material between the hand the camera.
