Not locally it didnt but the staffing issue has been going on for years, getting worse by the year too. Losing nurses with years of experience and replacing them with cheaper, less experienced ones who might be able to knock up a quick spreadsheet but chicken out when it comes to the bread and butter of wiping bums.

Tim, it always seems to me that you state your opinions politely and respectfully and there is absolutely no reason why we would consider it necessary to ban you.

Well, what else explains the NHS being kept going by foreign nurses and with the various NHS trusts actually sending recruitment teams abroad looking for nurses. Then theres the seasonal fruit and veg picking, admittedly mainly in places like Lincs, likely to collapse for lack of workers should Brexit happen. Eastern Europeans taking a chunk out of the building trades and hospitality work all across the country (and even in pubs in the smallest of Dorset villages for example)
Im currently in Franceland and Ive yet to knowingly be served or waited upon by a non-French type.
Meanwhile back home in the UK.....
It could have something to do with record low unemployment in the UK.... perhaps we really do need foreign workers and maybe they bring economic benefits rather than costing us money.

Perhaps we in Britain should make it more profitable to go to work than to be on the dole. In whichever way is best, ie. pay less on the dole or more in wages.

The amount of times I've heard, "If I go to work, I'm only xx better off than when I stay at home all week on benefits"

Do you know, I've often seen it reported but never actually heard it myself.

It's a very common situation. I guess it depends on where you live to some extent though

When employers improve their productivity by "rationalisation", "downsizing", or whatever euphemism they use, until those workers get new jobs the taxpayer supports them, reducing the GNP.

I was 'on the dole' for 3 years in the early 90s. It wasn't easy and it wasn't profitable!

I have been made redundant myself on three occasions and didn't enjoy the experience at all. Unfortunately redundancy is becoming an increasingly common experience, along with the insecurity of zero-hours contracts.

We also have to accept that for some people it is more profitable not to work. If you know how to work the system, which some do, there are benefits available.

It is easy to forget that working can incur significant costs such as travel to and from work, working clothes, childcare and so forth. I know several people who have said they were little better of working than unemployed and knowing their circumstances I can believe it.

Sorry I don't have any photographs to prove it though.

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

Basically been made redundant 3 times, 1st time walked straight into another job, the same really the second time and then took voluntary redundancy/ early retirement a year ago. Other than child benefit, I’ve never had any benefits whatsoever. Lucky I guess, cos I certainly winged my entire working life!
I was lucky, left school and went into a technician apprenticeship, living in digs with a couple who worked at same place, so I got a lift into work. Had to clock in or lose money so I reckon I got the work ethic right from the start. 7.30 start, no problem. Loved flexitime in recent years though.

Nigel, if you want to be banned you'll have to try much harder. At the moment you are going nowhere!

I find it unbelievable that, in any discussion of extending working lives due to financial necessity, the potential for involuntary redundancy at any time barely gets a mention. Difficult to plan for!

As for work paying, we had a situation when it did not. Our child was a few months old and was placed in a day nursery so that my wife could return to work. When he was there he cried a lot, which he did not at home.

We looked at the financial situation. Effectively, all my wife's earnings went to the day nursery so that she cold earn money to pay the day nursery. We agreed that she should stop work.
