Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

During September every year, the City of Toowoomba, which is about an hour and a half's drive west of Brisbane, puts on a display of flowers. Most are on display at Queen's Park, which is on the north-eastern boundary of the city centre, but a competition is also run to find the best garden.

Here is their web page: http://tcof.com.au/

I used to work as the Principal Engineer (Road Operations) for the Toowoomba Regional Council and every year my team would have a great amount of fun (NOT!) sorting out traffic management around Queen's Park and around the city centre for the Flower Parade.

This year I was intending to go up to Toowoomba for the Parade and to look at the flowers, knowing that the traffic management is now somebody else's worry.... Unfortunately I have received a summons to make myself available for Jury Duty for most of the month of September.

I was going through some of the photos which I took last year and was reminded of how pretty it was:

Re: Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

That is a nice set Larry.
Maybe you can get out of or not be selected for the court case. I hope I don't get called up again.
There was one I did get called in for, however I wasn't chosen for the jury team, thankfully.

I'm praying that they decide they don't really need me. I am just dreading the pile of files there will be on my desk and emails to be answered on my return.

That is a fantastic display of colour and you have photographed it very well indeed! I do hope you manage to avoid jury duty.

Surely you would much rather be sitting in a stuffy old courtroom than out in the open air photographing beautiful flowers, wouldn't you...? Nice flowers.

Re: Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

I didn't manage to avoid jury duty, but at least it didn't take place over the weekends. So, for the first time, I managed to go to the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Parade. I was surprised at the number of spectators. Ruthven Street, Margaret Street and Hume Street (along the parade route) were lined 4 to 5 people deep by the time the parade started.

Here are some photos, which I took before and during the parade. - I went back to Queens Park the next day (Sunday) to take photos of the flowers, but hadn't left enough time to visit the private gardens.

Margaret Street is Toowoomba's "Eat Street" and quite a few spectators had decided to make use of the sidewalk dining opportunities to have lunch and then watch the parade from a comfortable vantage point.

A little flower on the median strip:

Now this looks like a good place to watch the parade:

And so the parade starts:

Some local celebrities were driven around in old "Yank Tanks":

A flying Piggy Bank ???

The Wizard of OZ

Even Bat Man was there together with his entourage

The Koalas had to be saved:

although this one looked in need of some hangover medication:

The Police are always good value, although I have absolutely no idea as to the significance of this float:

I didn't even know that Toowoomba had a Town Crier:

Re: Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

After the parade, we strolled up through Queens Park hoping to get some "golden hour" photos, although not very successfully:

Before heading off back to Cawdor and getting there just too late to get some decent sunset shots:

Re: Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

The next morning (Sunday), I went to Queens Park to take some photos of the flowers there. I must admit that the flowers weren't as good as in previous years. - Probably brought on be the fact that we have just come through the driest, warmest winter since records began.

What a great set of photos. Glad you had the weekends to get these (& enjoy the time there). I hope that court case is not a long one & done quickly.

Thanks all. My jury duty finished on Friday and so I am free again. Only one trial in the three weeks.

Re: Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

A very nice set that gives a good idea of what to see. Certainly there is a plenty of colour to be had.
