Re: Uncomfortable Candids....

These are three very nice candids and it doesn't matter that they were shot at long range. You can work on reducing the distance from your subject as you gain confidence. A good environment in which to do this is at an event like a carnival, where lots of people are using cameras so you don't feel out of place. Nobody can really tell if you are taking pictures of the parade or individuals amongst the spectators.

My favourite is also the last one, it has a feeling of relaxed contemplation.

Yes - you may not feel comfortable while taking these shots but you should feel very comfortable with the results

Re: Uncomfortable Candids....

I also like the last one, and share your nerves with street photography although I'm working on being more confident.

I can't remember where I read it, but this advice helped me, and it was along the lines of you draw less attention to yourself by being confident than 'hiding'. If I was challenged then I'd delete the shot and hope for the best!

Thanks Amanda and yes I'd normally agree and I fact I'm not exactly known for being "shy and retiring" in most other aspects of my life - quite the opposite in fact

Re: Uncomfortable Candids....

At a recent demo of the EM1 Damian McGilicuddy referred to street photography as snooping - an opinion that I tend to find favour with. I try to not use a camera at eye level when "snooping", fold out screens and ultra wide lenses help to minimise visibility of what I am trying to achieve

Thanks - that's of course an option and I have used it to shoot from he hip very occasionally - the problem with that approach for me is that I think that just makes me look "furtive/sneeky" which can be even worse sometimes

"sometimes"

...but seriously I don't think it should be - I agree that for proper "candid" shots you need to keep the subject unaware but for me that's not necessarily sneaky
