The 'M'

Everyone's a photographer... until the 'M' setting. Usually the outcome of randomly spinning the SPAM dial.

I frequently use the 'M' setting when using flash. I select a suitable shutter speed (usually around 1/160s) and set the aperture I want, then let the flashgun control the exposure.

Good one. first I was think of a misspelling of baffling or something then I remembered BirdInFlight

I use M for indoor in Church. Outside, it's Professional mode. I relay on the Full matrix, center weighted and the Spot highlight/shadow. That EVF & Histogram as a guide for exposure.

Around here we call babes as biffs - so biffing sounds pretty nice

I started using mainly the M when I was shooting with my old E1 - the most automatic setting there was P but as the system was really basic with limited ISO then I felt the M was the only way to go. Hey, even my 10y old son is saying to me that last year he used auto, now he practices with A and S but soon will go to M

'M', in fact everything manual, for landscape work. Nothing auto or semi-auto.

'A' for just about everything else.

Like most photographers he has ups and downs. The two books you mention were wonderful, but I suspect his mind has been elsewhere in recent years with his establishment of the MP Foundation, curating multiple exhibitions and while he was president of Magnum.

He certainly risks over-exposure and over-saturation, and we've reached Peak Parr just at the moment.

As a street photographer I'd say he's every non-street photographer's favourite street photographer. He's a documentary photographer, really.

I don't use M. I use MF more than AF though.

I once read that if you use Manual and always set the exposure to the setting suggest you may as well have used A or S and got there faster.

So unless you regularly move away from the suggested exposure why use Manual.

There's no doubt that the more different settings you use, the greater the chances that you'll have left the camera in the wrong one when you reach for it next, and so you'll waste time while you realise that and switch it to how you need it to be.

That's much less of an issue when you're doing landscape, architecture or studio sorts of things, but when your subjects are moving fast or appearing only transiently (street, wildlife, sports) it is a risk. I do mostly the latter bunch.

You also get very used to your usual way of working - for example, one way to manage birds in flight swooping around against changing backgrounds of light sky and dim trees/fields is by setting a manual exposure for the bird, and that's often recommended as the 'pro' thing to do.

However, that becomes the wrong thing to do when the birds are also flitting in and out of sunlight and shade: that isn't rare, and my often-preferred solution of keeping the camera in Aperture priority and doing all the adjustments with the exposure compensator dial is actually universally applicable as long as you can react quickly enough.

I argue that the more practice you get at doing that one adjustment, the better and quicker you get at doing it and keeping up. I also always know what fundamental settings were in place on my camera when I left it.

Anyway, I do use M sometimes in predictable situations where it's very likely to be better, but people who go on about how it's what an expert/pro always does get right up my nose
