ChromeBooks?

Anyone used any of these ChromeBooks? They look pretty affordable but software, does the Oly Workspace run on it? Is the OS Windows 10?

It runs Chrome OS which is an open source OS, so probably another derivative of Linux...

(I expected it to be running Android to be honest!)

Chromeboocks run on a 'flavour' of Linux, rather than a 'Fischer Price' O.S. like W10!

Re: ChromeBooks?

I use a Chromebook as my laptop. Mine's got a fairly modest Pentium-class processor but is still fast enough for running Darktable.

Re: ChromeBooks?

A Chromebook is a laptop of a different breed. Instead of Windows 10 or macOS, Chromebooks run Google's Chrome OS. These machines are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the cloud.

I dont think the Oly workspace app will work.

Can I get the GIMP, Lr & Ps for Android &/or Snapseed to run on it for processing on the move?

Adobe actually support their apps on Chromebooks

If running Android apps I recommend you get a Chromebook with a touch screen.

Chromebooks now also support Linux apps. It's not point and click like installing Android apps but it's not rocket science.

Re: ChromeBooks?

Android versions of several Adobe apps—Photoshop Express, Lightroom for mobile, Photoshop Mix, Illustrator Draw, Comp CC, and the Creative Cloud app—are supported on Chromebooks as well. Installing a supported Adobe app on your Chromebook is easy.

GIMP can be installed as well.

I dont think W10 can be installed on a Chromebook.

Re: ChromeBooks?

As everyone says, Chromebooks run Chrome OS which is a Linux variant. In principle you will be able to run any Linux app on it (e.g. Darktable etc). The later Adobe apps will work on it, but not Lightroom Classic. The Oly Workplace app won't work, although you could try installing a Virtual Machine host (e.g. VirtualBox), install Windows in that and try it. I'm pretty sure it'll work, but I doubt the performance would be satisfactory.

The Acer Chromebooks look very nice though.

Re: ChromeBooks?

Some time ago I tried, without success, to get Workplace running under wine. I'm sure it must be possible but it kept complaining that it couldn't a DLL which was clearly installed. As I have no actual need for Workplace I gave up. I'll let others go down that particular rabbit hole

I also tried but couldn't get it working. Faststone works OK under Wine.

Thanks. I wasn’t aware that the Adobe apps could be installed/run on Linux.
