Apple Hell

It's only fair that we show a balanced view on this forum

I have an old iPhone 4 with iOS 7.1.2 (the latest it will download)

I've always "synced" it with my PC using iTunes and it's been no problem at all.

But now I have an iPad2 as well, and having "synced" that, it updates the APPs and many now don't work on the iPhone.

So what do Apple suggest...

Restart the app: Close the app and open it again.

Restart your device: Turn your device off and back on.

Check for iOS and app updates

Make sure that you're using latest version of iOS.
Open the App Store and tap Updates.
If updates are available, tap Update All.
If asked, enter your Apple ID password.

You might need a Wi-Fi connection to update some apps.

Install another app from the App Store

Try installing a different app that you don't have on your device. Find a free app from the App Store, and remember to use the same Apple ID that you used to download the app that you're having issues with.

Delete and reinstall the app:

Really, would never have thought of any of that...

I'm surprised that they don't say I need to update my phone.

Turns out the only thing that works is delete and re-install.

Bloody good job I'm not working.

Re: Apple Hell

They are obviously hoping that you will buy the new phone because it's easier than undoing the damage caused by it automatically syncing. Personally I will have nothing to do with itunes or appstore - I only have one apple product (given to me as a present) which I use with winamp to add and remove songs (pretty rarely!)

The thing that I find worst about apple products is that there is no way of making them do even simple things - my wifes ipad and kids ipods are unable to automatically change access point while walking round the house - they have to manually switch wifi off and on again! The other day my daughters ipod decided it wouldn't accept an ip address from our wifi and just insisted on making up it's own - in the end I had to force it to take a static ip and it didn't take that first time either! As for itunes, my wife sorts that out on her computer - it's banned from mine.

Cheers,

Ralph.

Re: Apple Hell

Itunes *shudder* Hated it on a PC, didn't think too much of it on a Mac.

I Don't use it at all, Apple make my computer, the rest of my life is multi-platform.

Re: Apple Hell

So you haven't seen the King's new suit of clothes then?

We'll have to be careful here if we don't want to be hunted down and silenced, but I for one have never bought into the Apple way of life. Granted they do make some good products, but they are clearly designed only to work with other Apple products.

For example, I have always liked the big Mac monitors, and even went to the Apple store happy to stump up the inflated price tag for one; but, I was informed by a Genius that they are designed so you cannot connect them to a PC.

(I bought an Iiyama 27" monitor instead, which uses exactly the same IPS panel, and looks very, very similar, but offers VGA, HDMI, DVI and Display Port connections for half the price!)

And how do you charge a MacBook with a Kensington 'Universal' car charger. (You can charge almost every other make of laptop ever made, but Apple don't make their connectors available to third parties.)

Our son has a MacBook which I agree is a nice machine, although nothing special in my view. It is also incredibly heavy for a 13" laptop whilst battery life seems to be limited to about eight hours. However, since buying it he has had to spend a fortune on special adaptors to connect USB devices, Ethernet, HDMI monitor and so forth, and has also had to return it for repair to replace a faulty Mag Safe connector. Apple also designs to SD card slot to prevent users from using SD cards to boost storage capacity.

I don't think the Apple utopia is quite as rosy as they would like us to think!

Re: Apple Hell

Some nasty cracks on that screen...

I'm very impressed with the tidiness of the desk.

Re: Apple Hell

It's not my desk Graham. My desk is nowhere near as tidy!

The photograph is actually from a German article which compared the Apple and iiyama displays. The iiyama was the clear winner at less than half the price!

Ok... it's her birthday so to hell with the expence and I purchased it.

That evening I decided to have a look on Ebay for the same item and to my horror found there were hundreds on sale from 99 Pence upwards, with free postage !

John
I bought a Lightning to USB cable for my iPad from eBay.

However, the genuine Apple cables have firmware embedded in them!

The Apple OS recognised that mine wasn't genuine, and popped upm a message saying "not charging".

The genuine cables are 25.00 each - for a USB Cable! Rip off or what?

Interesting! I have what I thought was an "Official" Apple lead. It charges my iPhone 4 from the USB on the PC, but will not charge the iPad 2

Yet if I plug it into the charger, it works perfectly.

Re: Apple Hell

This is interesting because I have a 2nd generation iPod which needs to be repaired. I took it into a Authorized Apple dealer and they said that it can't be repaired and so I am going back to get my old iPod and see if anyone else in Toronto can repair it.

"Olde" Bill from where else than Toronto.

I think that is because a pc usb socket can normally only provide 500mA or possibly 1A at the maximum, however iPads need a 2A supply to charge them, meaning that the pc can't give enough current. Also with the "non apple" leads, I believe that all that is missing is a link between one of the pins and the 5V supply, as I have chargers which have a specific port for Ipads which provides this (obviously not genuine as I refuse to pay their prices.) I'm sure that the information will be on the internet somewhere (although you may not be able to find it if you are browsing on an apple device.)

Cheers,

Ralph.

Thanks Paul, I will give those a try.

The Lightning connectors are a real weakness, especially when connected to the iPad, so I can see I will use a few in the iPad's lifetime.

It's odd that Apple are full of bullshit about the MagSafe connector for MacBooks, yet they fit a vulnerable connector to the iPad.

Re: Apple Hell

Pretty informative postings there. It also cements down the reason why I won't buy anything from Apple. My dislike started with a MacBook, It keeps overheating when pushed and as usual, everything cost $$$ (on a PC, there are lots of alternatives and "alternatives" )
Then I was asked to use an iPhone. Horrible. iTunes and everything just won't work. Nightmare after nightmare and finally, I dumped all. PC and Androids for me. Having said that, I am also very disappointed with Samsung and the way they handle their aftersales service, that's another nightmare.
