Re: How about another NE England meet?

Agreed, I'm happy with the proposal and definitely worth exploring the area both on site and off.

Re: How about another NE England meet?

May 3rd is one of the few weekend dates I have free, so please add me to the list but not for the mine tour - I still have a bad back and sore head from the last mine tour I did at Killhope.

Re: How about another NE England meet?

Right then, the mine trip is booked for 5 people at 12:15, 3rd May. No deposit needed.

We have John, Chris, Greg, Geoff, Ralph for the mine trip and Ken missing out the mines. We are committed to the mines trip at £40, so if someone has to drop out we'd still need their £8.

We could meet somewhere at, say, 10:30 and we'd have an hour and a half before we need to park up at the Nenthead mines. Any suggestions for somewhere? Chris - you may have an idea of somewhere to spend an hour or so.

The mine trip should be over at 13:30, so we could lunch and then have a bimble around the mine buildings and spoil heaps. I'll be getting the 60mm mounted and looking for some of the exotic and rare botany on display I think!

Does that all sound ok?

Re: How about another NE England meet?

Thanks for setting this up John
Within not being sure where people are coming from, there are a few options so excuse me while I think aloud!!

If anyone wants to meet in Hexham earlier, then I will have space for 3 others or am happy to have an umbrella on top of my car for others to follow!
I will probably make a choice from two driving routes -
1/. Hexham to Blanchland, then to Rookhope, then up Weardale to Nenthead. This is a bit 'wilder', authentic backroads, big scenery, with a great feel for the old mining past
2/. Hexham to Allendale Town, then to Allenheads, then via Coalcleugh to Nenthead. This is a slightly more genteel, more agricultural dale with a little 'wilderness' at the end
As driving routes, there is a lot to see of the outstanding moorland scenery. Most of the roads are minor roads with occasional steep-ish narrow bits!
Both routes could include a café and would take about 1 hour driving time from Hexham plus time for photos and café? On both routes, there can be a short walk to either Grove Rake mine or to old ruined miners' cottages at Coalcleugh, for which I would add about an extra half hour.
If I assume final meeting point beforehand is in the Nenthead Mine car park at 12:00, then for Route 1/. option working backwards I would guess leave Chatterbox café 11:30 arr café 10:45 onwards, leave Hexham 09:30ish. With Route 2/. option (if including walk to old ruins for example) I would leave Hemmels café at 11:00 arrive 10:15ish, leave Hexham 09:30ish.
If everyone wanted independence then the meetup could be at one of the two cafés - if driving directly to Nenthead from either café I would assume it to take about 20-30 minutes, so leave café 11:30

Cafés:
Chatterbox Café, St John's Chapel - http://www.thisisdurham.com/durham-f...x-cafe-p718671
The Hemmel, Allenheads - http://www.thehemmelcafe.co.uk/index.htm

Right, that's the end of my think aloud! Sorry to ramble! If you like wilderness, which I do, then I will probably drive myself via route 1/. and stop at Chatterbox - not used it myself but have heard good things

Regards
Chris

Re: How about another NE England meet?

Hi there Chris!

That sounds really good - I can make Hexham by 9:30am no problem (google says 3 hours with no roadworks, so if I set off by 6:00am I should make it no problem.) Having never ventured so far north from the Yorkshire dales I am looking forward to seeing some of Northumberland's dales - route 1 sounds really good to me. I will probably follow you rather than take advantage of your kind offer of a lift - heading home at the end of the day I will be going south west rather than north east.

John - Thank you once again for organising this trip - I'm really looking forward to it!

Cheers,

Ralph.

Re: How about another NE England meet?

As I'll be driving up Weardale, I'll give Hexham a miss and be at the Mines in good time.

Café at Chatterbox café in St John's Chapel enroute up Weardale 10:45-ish?
Or do others prefer to café after the mine visit?

Re: How about another NE England meet?

Count us in : either 2 adults plus little Richard who is now 6 and very fit ...
or if no children : 1 adult for the tour.

We shall be driving from Haltwhistle down to Alston then Nenthead so if there are any people on that route who want a lift : 2 comfy seats available.

Re: How about another NE England meet?

You're booked on Ulfric.

The max is 10 for a guided tour, and if we're going to have any room to take photos I think 6 is pretty much it, so that's it full up now.

Re: How about another NE England meet?

I've PMd Ralph re meetup options but not fully sure who is meeting at the Chatterbox café - at moment it looks like it could be John, Greg?, myself and Ralph, with Ken, Ulfric and Geoff meeting at the mine 10:45?
I'm looking forward to a good day of exploring and catching up! Lets hope the weather helps us too, as we've been having some great sunshine and clarity recently.
Regards
Chris
