Re: Anyone here in to drones/quadcopters?

Well, I've been out and here are some shots (a couple more in my gallery too):

I didn't spend too much time on taking pictures but I did feel it was over-exposing and adjusted the compensation down. There was a slight breeze and some motion blur is evident in most of the stills, but not that bad unless you pixel-peep at 100% on some shots.

I launched the drone about 5 times and each time from my hand, landing back on my hand again - it was very muddy, so I successfully avoided that

Highest I got was about 17 metres. I didn't dare go higher!

A limiting factor was the app reporting that the compass wasn't working properly (it reckoned there was an unusual electromagnetic interference). This limits its flight range for safety reasons. I recalibrated the compass a couple of times but this only seemed to sort it out temporarily, so I'll have to look into that.

Outside, the noise from the props is not an issue at all.

Again, well-pleased so far!

Ian

Re: Anyone here in to drones/quadcopters?

Looks like plenty of fun potential there Ian, those results are better than I'd have expected for such a device.

Do you remember the Albion pub that used to stand by that canal bridge? That used to be my local many years ago .

Wow! Yes I do remember the Albion pub, though I only ever went in there once I think. The canalside homes in the photo replaced the pub at least 15 years ago, closer to 20 maybe.

Re: Anyone here in to drones/quadcopters?

I lived in Hemel until 2002 so I remember the pub being demolished as well as the Kent paint-brush factory and the rest that made way for the new flats, Sainsbury's etc. I'm glad the Frogmore paper mill survived though, I managed to get a look around it last year. I'd always wondered what was in there!

Re: Anyone here in to drones/quadcopters?

Very impressive for the money - even just 17 metres altitude offers a massive change in perspective.

Re: Anyone here in to drones/quadcopters?

Oh dear - get thee behind me Satan (Dobby)

impressive - but how to justify it for me - I could see it would be great at big outdoor parties with a dozen or more people sat round a table and the Dobby gentle cruising just above head height down the centre of the table looking at the people.

Re: Anyone here in to drones/quadcopters?

i made the mistake of going to the Model Engineering Show one year! There was this large set of castings (put together) to make your own Tiger tank. There was only one thing put me off... you're not allowed to fit a real cannon on it! (Damn!) That was before drones. But you can have a lot of fun with something that you can mount a camera on, and send it by remote control where you can't go yourself. One thing puts me off drones, however (bigger ones); I suspect that before long there will be draconian legislation controlling their use, if idiots keep using them to buzz airliners and so on.

There are already lots of restrictions - you can't fly one within 50 metres of a building, for example. Ones over 250g in flying weight (The Dobby is only 199g) must be registered with the CAA. Quite a lot of public and private places with open spaces already ban drones (and flying model aircraft). It hasn't stopped people bending these regulations though!

I'm too law-abiding GPS drones (including mine) now have geo-fencing data in them so they can't fly in restricted airspace, like at airports.

Re: Anyone here in to drones/quadcopters?

Actually I am a little surprised I haven't yet come across another member who has dipped a toe into flying drones, let alone for photography

One of the things that impresses me is just how small it is, literally fitting in the palm of Ian's hand.
