Cuba 28 - Trains

It is a bit surprising to see a collection of rusting steam trains just behind El Capitolio in central Havana! Part museum and part scrap yard with some school buses stored for good measure. Mostly from America built around the turn of the century, note the dates on the guy's hand as he pointed out the different locos then left me to get on with the camera. Mostly taken with the Pana 7-14mm @ f5.6 which performed really well with superb sharpness. CA was a bit of a problem with extreme back lighting, but it is so light compared with the Oly version which it replaced.

Note the scaffolded Capitol Building in the background.

Handy compost heap.

Quick coat of paint and it is good to go!

or not, relaxing on the job.

Hi!

And the date is.....

Plenty to go at.

Finished?

And a little German one.

Nice Wheels.

Re: Cuba 28 - Trains

That's interesting, #1/#3/#4 looks like a Mikado 2-8-2, possibly made by Baldwin; but I can't see a rear bogie. So it could be a Consolidation 2-8-0, but it looks more modern than that - the Consolidation first appeared around the end of the Civil War. Shame we can't see the makers' plate. Consolidations were definitely built by Baldwin Loco Works.

But they are interesting and good photos. Those locos should make the basis of a good museum in the future.

Absolutely a brilliant series here, BT ... your character studies are just superb!

+ The tower in the b/g of #2 is amazing ... your set makes me wish I was there.

I know nothing about american trains but they sure look interesting.

This Cuba series is looking good, just waiting for the jazz musicians.

Re: Cuba 28 - Trains

This has been an exceptional series from day one and it just gets better... hopefully with more to come?

It has been the armchair holiday of a lifetime.

Many thanks for sharing the experience.

Keith, found this very interesting website - http://www.steamlocomotive.info/country.cfm?which=cuba - listing all the steam trains in Cuba with their respective numbers. Can't find the number of the red one in any of my photos though! Should be able send the guy some updated info and photos.
