Green Tiger Beetles - Living Jewel or Mini Monster?

We found these Green Tiger Beetles in Yorkshire during June, they were fascinating to watch.

I'm grateful that they are so small, they're pretty ferocious looking creatures.

I couldn't get close to them with the 60mm macro lens so all shots were taken using the 300mm and MC-14.

Don't like the look of those jaws...so I'm glad they are small! Mini monsters.

Re: Green Tiger Beetles - Living Jewel or Mini Monster?

I've watched them on sandy paths in Scotland. They wait on the path and when they see you, fly further down the path. With their wind cases (elytra) open, their green iridescent abdomen catches the light looking like a flying emerald. They settle further down the path and turn to watch you, and as you approach, then fly further away, but keeping to the path. This can go on for several 'take offs', until they eventually fly into the heather.

I've only seen them at certain times of the year, so I expect they don't live very long.

These were found in a sandy area near a pond in Yorkshire Jim, they behaved very much as you describe.

I tried photographing them with the 60mm but they were having none of it, as soon as I got too close they flew away however, by using the 300mm and MC-14 I was able to get close enough to capture a few shots.

I know we get them in Suffolk but I've only seen them here a couple of times.

They seem to favour sandy heathland. I've not seen them in Herts..
