AFL/AEL mode settings

Every time I change cameras I puzzle about which AFL/AEL modes to use.
As I'm sure you all know, there is a menu option to vary this setting separately for each of: S-AF, C-AF, and MF - with a default provided for each case.

For S-AF the default is 'mode1' where AE is locked on the shutter half press in addition to initiating AutoFocus.

'mode2' doesn't lock AE until the shutter is fully pressed.

If, like me you are in the habit of doing focus and recompose, the exposure level can change significantly after recomposing, in which case the resulting image would be wrongly exposed if AFL/AEL mode1 is used. Hence I have always changed this menu setting to use mode2.

Please can anyone explain what I am overlooking and why 'mode1' might be useful/preferable to the point where Olympus choose it as the default for S-AF?

Apologies if this topic has already been explained - my forum search didn't find anything.
Thanks.
