Cloud storage

Just updated my iCloud storage from the freebie, only to find that I cannot store RAW files there.
Anyone use iCloud, or could point me in the direction of a cloud that does store RAW file at similar price to iCloud, 79p a month for 50GB, i think.

This is then there as a back-up remote from the computer, and the image I use is on my local drive.

Obviously if you're using another editing package then you can automate that, or you can manually copy files across.

I also have Apple photo import the photos so I have the synchronisation between the Mac, the iPhone and iPad, so all photos get loaded onto the Mac as originals which means if I import from the memory card to the iPad the files get stored as originals on the Mac, as JPEG on iCloud (within Apple photo) and available for import into Lightroom from the MAC as well....

A bit cumbersome but I end up with four copies of every photo...

Original via the MAC on the internal drive, copy of the original in Lightroom on an external drive and two copies on iCloud, one within photos and one as a file n the iCloud drive....

By backing up the Lightroom irc at file I also get the editing detail, but that's a manual task....

Hopefully I shouldn't lose anything and the advantage is I can have access to my entire library wherever I am.

Re: Cloud storage

There is a particularly large cloud over our house at the moment, so I put all my stuff on a small USB stick, got my old catapult out of the shed and fired it into the cloud. My data will now be OK? That is how it works, yes?

Re: Cloud storage

Amazon Prime will store unlimited photo files for you for no fee other than the normal Prime fee. Olympus ORF files are accepted as photo file, to my certain personal knowledge, all 350GB of it.

Re: Cloud storage

Snaarman , no! non! no! It will just fall down. You need to tie it to a drone, join a very long wire to the drone then launch the drone, the other end of the wire needs to go to an adapter to supply power to keep it up there
There have been cases of birds flying into the wire cutting off the power and causing your backup to CRASH!

Isn't that a high tech form of cloud seeding. In the older days backing up to a cloud was part of the driving test for your reindeer and sleigh license.

Re: Cloud storage

This has caused me to try out the Amazon Prime storage facility, it is great in theory but until we have equal up and down speeds the practicality of cloud backup especially when uploading from laptops in hotels when the network speeds can be quite slow.

So a good idea but only for the selected best of the bunch type pictures.

Re: Cloud storage

If you're looking for a cloud-based backup solution, what about Crashplan? It's $60 per year with unlimited storage.

That can be paired with flickr to store finished photos for viewing.

Crashplan still has the downside that Sapper had discovered, that to make good use of cloud backup you need decent upload speed, which I do, but it still took several full days to get the 350GB up there.

But another consideration is the longevity of the company providing the service. I recall signing up for Online Data Recovery many many years ago. I paid extra for a CD copy of the backup, and was glad I had done so after the plug was pulled on the service. JustvlikevthecTV and for a cleaning product "Bam and it's gone". I hope Amazon will be less likely to disappear.

Re: Cloud storage

There is a story (how true or not - I do not know) about a US company offering cloud type storage. The company and the IRS had an altercation and the company's assets were seized by the IRS, people who had stored images on the cloud drives were denied access to the drives and the IRS considered the images to be of zero value as it was just a series of 0s and 1s.

How true - I do not know.

Cloud should be treated as a 3rd or 4th level storage facility.

YMMV
