Olympus 300mm Pro Available.

I've just taken a call from Digital Depot advising that they have an Olympus 300mm Pro in stock.

As I already have one, Digital Depot may well still have this should anyone on the Forum be interested.

As an aside, Park Cameras contacted me yesterday to advise that they had a Panasonic 100-400mm should I still want one, again I declined as I'd already bought one.

It looks like the long lenses are slowly making their way into stores.

Dave

Re: Olympus 300mm Pro Available.

Received my 300 from HDEW today, bit of a price hike though.
If it's not pelting down tomorrow morning I'll be up at 1st light and out in the park.

Do you mind sharing how much it cost in the end? Fully understand if not.
Thanks

Re: Olympus 300mm Pro Available.

I paid 2109. I asked them if they minded if I mentioned I got it from them, they had no objection.
Obviously with all the turmoil in the currency markets this may not reflect the price they will be asking when stock next comes in.
I'm sure the prices currently advertised by other retailers for this lens will be amended.

Re: Olympus 300mm Pro Available.

Congratulations Mack. HDEW don't appear to list the lens on their website at the moment. I suppose there is no point if they can't get stocks of it.

Park Cameras are now listing it as out of stock too. It was in stock this morning. It is certainly a rare piece of equipment.

I really count myself lucky, they are rarer than hens teeth!
I've just got up to go out and see what I can get in Bushy Park. It's a bit weird living in Surrey but going to the outskirts of London to be sure of a good variety of birds.

I think that's going to affect all of us buying photo equipment, should put a damper on GAS

Quite a learning curve this morning, I wasn't happy using the 300 with the 1.4x teleconverter, images weren't at all sharp.
Then I discovered shutter anti-shock, made a heck of a difference!

One question: are any IS adjustments necessary when using a lens like the 300 that has OIS? I had the body IS on AUTO.
I noticed a menu option for "lens priority" in IS but couldn't fathom it out.

The 300 with the MC-14 produces very sharp images, there are some examples in my gallery if you're interested.

You don't need to make any adjustments to IS, in my experience if you have OIS switched on in the lens this ensures IBIS is switched on, if you switch off lens OIS it also switches off IS in the body.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Dave, I still don't understand the setting "lens priority IS" though.

I believe the setting "Lens priority IS" is for use with lenses, such as the Panasonic 100-400, which have built in lens OIS but which cannot use the dual IBIS/OIS system that Olympus lenses/bodies can.

My wife has this set on her E-M5 II so that the system defaults to lens OIS when she uses the E-M5 II with the Panasonic 100-400 mm.

I hope this helps.

Dave

Do you mean what time setting I'm using?
Yesterday I left the setting on 0 seconds, TBH this setting is new to me (as is everything m4/3) and I've not yet investigated the effects of changing the time setting.
Do you have a preference?

Re: Olympus 300mm Pro Available.

I've been using 0 but have not always been happy with the results. I've not paid much attention to the shutter speed as I tend to use auto ISO but closer photos come out significantly better than more distant ones.
