they mightn't be around much longer if drop the 5 cent coin [for those poor sods who live elsewhere in the world; the Echidna is on the our smallest value coin and there is off/on chit chat that it will be dropped sooner than later ]

Hadn't heard any talk of dropping the zack, I suppose you could say that at last the penny has dropped probably wouldn't be missed.

"Dumb" phones they are, over-priced toys, autonomous loose little canons who fight their owners all the way!

Actually your right, they're not very cuddly at all. In fact when I did a tour of the Outback last spring, I happened to run over one while driving through tall grass; its quills punctured a brand new front tyre leaving dozens of tiny spikes embedded in the casing. It was unrepairable! ! !

Yes indeed Ed, I'm sure it could not have survived being run over by even a small car such as mine.

Re: "The Best Camera ...

Apparently they have comparatively large brains and can dig straight down with their bodies maintained in a horizontal position, using all four legs.

That's all I know about echidnas - that and that they are monotremes!

I wish we we had them here!

Jim

Re: "The Best Camera ...

You are quite privileged to have seen one in the wild Mark & any photo you can get of them is worth taking.

They certainly are very good at digging themselves down & in a hurry. We came across one (many years ago now) down the south coast of NSW & I stopped the car, donned my ski gloves & tried to pick it up. It was already have buried & took a lot of tugging to get it out of the ground (I know I shouldn't have done it, but I was young and....). It was cute & cuddly in my gloves. After a little look at the lovely creature we then put it back on the ground where it quickly scurried off. I can't blame it. I did get photos of them last year kept captive at Featherdale Wildlife Park (in the outer west of Sydney).

Jim, you actually know more about echidnas than I - I didn't know they are called monotremes or that they have comparatively large brains. I did know that they can dig down with their bodies horizontal as you see this one from my 2010 archives shows. Coincidentally, this was shot at the same location as the opening shots but with the E-3.

"Boys will be boys", (weren't we Ross!) - thankfully as we grew older we learnt the error of our ways and became more environmentally responsible.
But over the years I have been lucky in encountering Echidnas. The following three shots from my 2008 Tasmanian archives were taken with a CanonS5 IS

Re: "The Best Camera ...

I hope you don't mind but here are the two photos (I have more) from Featherdale Wildlife Park last year.

Forever hopeful?

Didn't get lucky?

Re: "The Best Camera ...

Well Ross you can't expect to have all the luck with those gorgeous birds that literally land on your veranda and have Echidnas too. Echidnas prefer to live south of the border down Mexico way mate
