Oh, and what about the use of IV in stead of IIII by the plebs? It's even on the face of Big Ben.

Domitian would have them chained to an oar, innit?

I seems that IV is the modern way of usage.
I must say that I am guilty of pedantry, but sometimes am caught out by modern usage.

Tee hee!

My point is that the usage of language (OK, poor example with numerals) changes with time whether we like it or not. The subtractive form is no longer frowned upon and is probably seen as clever.
