Sentinel were primarily a maker of steam road waggons (they always used that spelling) and their rail locomotives were based on that technology so are of unusual design. They were well ahead of their time and their steam lorries actually cost less to run than the diesels of the time, but government taxation schemes based on vehicle weight favoured the diesels and that eventually led to the demise of the Sentinel Waggon Works. The Sentinel company was bought by Rolls Royce, such was the quality of their products, and the Sentinel building still exists in Shrewsbury.
