Re: total lunar eclipse on Sunday / Monday morning

Doubt I'll manage to stay awake for the red bit so here's the best I could get hand held with the 40-150 + 1.4tc a short while ago. One shot with heavy crop.

Re: total lunar eclipse on Sunday / Monday morning

If someone could guarantee no clouds I might (well maybe might) just get up.
But, on thinking about it I will pass, beds too comfy and warm.

Blood Moon 2

Alas the first a little disappointing. Focus so hard to get. A 1 second exposure was too much, so not very sharp at all. Never mind, another 10 years to wait for the next one...

2nd image processed with Faststone. Looks a little cleaner...……...

Impressive photos of the blood moon Mark, what ISO were you using? Good control of the noise.

Just set the lens to infinity - or won't your AF lens allow this?

Thanks both. ISO3200 on these. As the moon was quite dark, usual moon settings were no good. Even at ISO3200, shutter speed was 1", which does not freeze the moon with the Pany 100-400mm lens (at 400mm) You can see a slight star trail on the neighbouring stars.

Again as the moon was dark, focus is difficult. These lenses don't have any markings on them Steve, so not obvious infinity. Auto Focus is difficult and manual is as well as detail is very dull. I used a star to focus on in manual in the end.

BTW, my photo was on the Weather report on BBC1 at 08:20. Best moon photo I saw was from a fellow photographer from Llandudno...…….

The infinity setting on lenses is only approx so not good enough for lunar shots.
Most lenses allow you to even go past the infinity symbol on the dial.

The benefit of fully manual lenses. I have many and have not encountered beyond optical infinity.

AF use control systems with some form of actuation system, eg electric motor, and control systems need to overshoot to some extent to achieve fast response. Hence the beyond infinity effect.
