Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

I'm sorry to admit that I have Homer " D'oh" moments at the very mention of this sort of thing !!

Hopefully something has now gone through via the 'friends and family' route.

I can see the email address registered with the PayPal account or associated with the donor, but this may not necessarily be the same as the email address registered on the forum, so it would be very difficult to identify a non-member. You can leave a message with your donation though.

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

PayPal donate button working ok using android, tap the amount, keyboard appears, enter amount, punch in zeros to move the numbers to the left of the decimal point.

Maybe we should all test it...just to make sure

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

No joy for me Ian, I'm using the latest version of Safari and I cannot change the amount from £0.00. I should add, this is via the 'donate button' on the home page.

I am more than happy to donate on a monthly basis to help keep the site running and equally importantly help reduce your 'personal' running costs as to be fair to you the sum you quoted is 'some commitment' on your behalf therefore we should all do our bit to help out.

This site is a very useful resource of information, frequented by like-minded people who are mostly polite, courteous, non-judgemental and helpful to one another something which seems to be quite rare on most forums. Whilst I still have a digital Pen-F , these days I mostly shoot film on a Nikon F6 and not one member has ever derided me for doing so, so I am more than happy to help out once the button is working properly again.

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

It looks like the way PayPal implements the amount entry is not consistent across different browsers. The best advice seems to be to place the cursor to the right of the last Zero and then enter the amount. Other browsers let you highlight the zero amount and then replace it wit the amount you desire. Here is a quote from the PayPal support forum from someone who experienced the problem and then fixed it:

"This was driving me crazy per the original post. In case someone else comes to this thread through a search as I did, I believe this is what's going on and how to solve the issue.

On Firefox when I attempted to send money, after entering the recipient's email I would get to a screen that seemed to be stuck on $0.00 for the payment amount with no way to enter an amount. I would click on the amount and nothing happened, there is no box in which to enter a payment amount.

Finally I entered an amount of money by clicking the cursor to be just to the right of the last 0 in "$0.00" and then typing the amount of money to be sent, and it worked. Do not try to delete the 0.00 characters, just start typing.

Later I tried using the Chrome browser, it was a similar scenario, no box in which to enter the payment amount, but it did allow me to highlight the "$0.00" and then type an amount, whereas Firefox did not allow me to highlight the amount."

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

I've updated our Privacy Policy to clarify the separation of forum membership details from our other activities, like the hire service and, of course, your donations. In principle, the forum and your membership details are entirely separate from PayPal and the hire service. In other words, if you hire something or may a funding donation, you have to provide your personal details again and they are managed without reference to your forum membership. In fact, to donate or hire you don't require a forum membership at all.

Ian

PS If we decide to levy a charge of some sort for posting small ads, our privacy policy will be updated accordingly.

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

I don't like this give what you can approach. I once donated £25 to become a silver member of a forum . The clique took exception to something I said and I got banned . lost me £25 and could not even contact the site. Once bitten twice shy.
Personally I prefer £0 (no rights) £10 ,£20, £30 (increasing rights ) and an annual reminder to pay up. This gives the administration a good indication of ongoing income rather than having to grovel every time the pot starts to empty.

This is a difficult issue; certainly for the longer term we do need to work out a way to generate a flow of continuous income. There are various possibilities. I'm not keen on a tier system, personally, but I may have to embrace this in one form or another.

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

Its not hard to do the math to indicate to people a suitable donation.. £2400 a year divided by the number of active members equals £xx add on for some dropping out .
This lets us know if its £1 or £10 you need.....Annual reminder critical for success.

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

I am hoping to generate income to complement donations; affiliate sales and some other possibilities.

Much of this depends on growing the audience which is why modernising the site is important.
