Doh!

Am thinking seriously about buying an E4xx for the other half, as she's getting interested in getting back into photography again (she used to be a dab hand with a Nikkormat until it died about 10 years ago...). She really liked the look of the E420 when she saw one at a demo the other day.

Digital Depot was advertising the "E420 DZ kit" for £249 in "Amateur Photographer" at the weekend: I didn't see it until last night, and when I rang up this AM, they had sold all their stock. Yes, it was a printing error, but they had, the man said, been honouring it!

Talk about bad luck. I normally read AP the same evening it arrives...

Anyone pick up on this mega-bargain offer?

Wow - that would have been a substantial loss per sale I'd have thought?

I think the vendor does have some protection if it's a genuine mistake, so I wonder if they were obliged to sell at the wrong price?

Re: Doh!

They were lucky to have a stock in the first place, even to sell at a mistaken price. The E420 seems to be flying off the shelves. I have tried three or four times to buy one from shops that say they are 'in stock', only to be told at the final hurdle they'd all gone. Eventually I went the Ebay route and I think I got a reasonable deal. At least on Ebay one dealer had the 25mm pancake lens, and I have yet to see those in the shops!

Re: Doh!

As I understand it they don't have to sell at that price, though it sounds like they did it as a gesture of goodwill.

I've bought stuff from Digital Depot and found them to be good to deal with.

I think you are right. In contract terms of "offer," "acceptance" and "consideration," the offer is that of the consumer bringing the item to the till where it is accepted by the vendor and consideration is passed.

The shop therefore doesn't have to sell at the price advertised, although precedent may dictate differently if it is an obvious statement of an offer which is then accepted by the consumer. (If I remember correctly the case around this precedent was Carlil vs. Carbolic Smoke Ball company)

I may be slightly incorrect here. Essentially the message is that you can't demand to buy something at it's posted price - Digital Depot used some goodwill here so good on them.

That's my understanding too. I've also found DD very good in the past.

Mind you, I think I had a similar situation with Fotosense when I bought my E510. I am fairly sure it was advertised in AP below the price it should have been (certainly I recall significantly lower than anyone else at the time - long off-phone conversation at the other end etc), but they honoured it. Guess which two companies I'll be checking out first in future.

Re: Doh!

Sounds more like a price for an E400 or E410.

Re: Doh!

Oh what a pity, and what an amazing bargain for the people who did spot the advert in time. An amazing bargain.

I'll have to remember that next time I'm out shopping for carbolic smoke balls!

I know that this thread is a few months old, but my local electrical superstore have just sold off about fifty E410 DZ kits for 240 and once they'd all gone, the shop allowed several "disappointed customers" (me included ) to have the E420 DZ kit for the same price .

Read the full story here (Link ...) and then come back and add me to your "Most Hated Members" list .
