Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

I broke my newest lens yesterday my 8-18mm Leica DG.

H-E08018 1 by Alf Branch, on Flickr

Well this lens cost me £850 but as Panasonic have not set up a repair route they wil generously replace it for about £700. That is if you think that is generous.
This what they said

I am sorry but there is no route at present to repair this lens

We can provide an exchange price of approximately £550 + vat + carriage. If you wish to proceed with this please log on line at www.dkavs.co.uk and send the lens in to us.

We will provide a more accurate estimate and when paid the replacement lens will be ordered and sent to you after arrival here.

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

Would have thought there could be some obscure EU rule about support for items sold within the EU.

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

Blimey effectively no after sales support from Panasonic, sorry to hear that Alf.
Good to know though.

What are you going to do?

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Alf. I wonder about the build quality if it breaks that significantly, simply because the wind blows your tripod over. Seems rather poor service from Panasonic too.

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

Olympus had some early issues with mount breakages on the 12-40. Not only did they have a repair "route", but they actually repaired many people's lenses at no cost.

Alf,
Sorry to see this. I had a similar experience with Panasonic a few years ago when my Pan Leica 14-150 4/3 lens developed a fault with the zoom ring.

My conclusion (following some limited dis-assembly) is that their design & construction processes preclude anything other than minor cosmetic repairs. I then decided not to purchase any more Panasonic lenses, even though Iím currently very tempted by the 8~18mm lens.

It seems to me that Panasonicís ethos is that of a consumer electronics producer - with all the disposability that this implies - whereas Olympus (camera division) have more of a background in precision instrument manufacture and thus give greater consideration to repairability.

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

Alf,
A further thought. Now that Panasonic have said the lens is not repairable, have you considered making a claim for accidental damage on your household contents insurance - it should be within the limit for the personal possessions category?

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

Sad news Alf. Does it have any resale value on a certain auction site as "for spares" ?

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

B.... h.... thatís tough. Sorry to hear youíve got this.

I was going to have a play with the new Panny 50-200 plus teleconverter tomorrow at the show. Hearing this Iíll probably still do so out of interest, but even though itís usefully a lot lighter and longer than the 40-150 Pro Iím never going to get one new. Same goes for the 8-18, actually.

Second hand in due course might be OK, but Iíll put up with Olyís extra grammes now.

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

Fairly shocking approach by Panasonic for what isn't exactly a cheap item (mental note made).

Have you tried contacting some specialist repair companies? A quick Internet search for "digital lens repair" returns lots of hits. Might be worth a try.

Luton cameras do Panasonic repairs, might be work emailing them.

I have been working away today and emailed both
Luton said they though the lens body looked damaged and would need to go DKAVS for calibration
It DKAVS that said it is replacement only throughout Europe.

Ace said send it to them but I suspect parts would be an issue
