12-100 that is.
Been enquiring extensively about upping from a 12-40 to 12-100.
That was until I discovered by accident that the 12-40 don't stack.
A 'PRO' lens of that price, that's ridiculous.
As I do a fair amount of hand held stacking, I'm sticking with my 12-40.

That’s strange, the specifications says it can:

Don't forget the term 'Pro' is just marketing spiel attempting to suck you in. I have not seen this absurd marketing jargon used by any other manufacturer, it's just b******s.

'The 12-40 don't stack' - what does that mean? I have the same lens and wasn't aware 'Pro' lenses are supposed to stack. Is that why we don't see many press photographers using Olympus kit?

The 12-100 does focus stack - I used it a lot last year for flower photography and it worked well.

It was in E-M1 Mk II FW update 2.0 where it has been added.

Possible to use focus stacking photography with "M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-100mm F4.0 IS PRO".

The 12-40 always did, but the 12-100 F4 didn't at first, on the appropriate bodies. I notice it isn't mentioned in the E-M1 (MK I) FW updates though.

Of course, if you try stacking lenses (like a tower) they might topple over though.

Good, but it can't focus stack.
Excellent lens, used on my OMD EMImkII. As it is a PRO lens I assumed it would focus stack - but it does not ( confirmed by Olympus, but it does not tell you this anywhere on their website!).

This is a buyers review from WEX, obviously now outdated.....sorry.

'Focus tacking' - Sounds like bloody nonsense to me. Amoungst other constructs, artists use colour to emphasise or de-emphasis, this giving the viewer a route map to help visualise. The photographer has a unique tool called differential focusing. Artist would love this; for them everything is in focus. Use the aperture for its primary purpose.

It's only nonsense because you missed the 'S'
In macro photography (by far the main use of focus stacking) you frequently can't get enough DOF for the subject. At really high magnifications (actually microphotography) I found 7 shots insufficient to get all the WIDTH of a fly's leg focused, and my focus control wasn't good enough to manage more!


I'm sure there are other cases where stacking might be wanted, such as telephoto shots in poor light, or to get increased background blur while having all the subject focused.


FWIW all my lenses focus stack - just none of them in camera.

Focus stacking is a great feature. I think all of the "Pro" lenses and the macro lenses will work with stacking on the E-M1ii. Even those that don't stack still support focus bracketing meaning you can stack afterwards in Photoshop or such like. Actually I prefer this anyhow since it gives more control of the final image and usually a higher quality final result

Dave, it might be a good idea if you add in an 'EDIT' with the updated information (that it is now included, at least for E-M1 Mk II) to the original post so others finding this thread are not misled with 'out of date' details etc. Also changing the thread status to "Solved" would probably be good too.
