Tripod Head

I have a Manfrotto 391Rc2 Pan and tilt head but it is not up to the 300mm Pro on it. I do have a 410 Junior head which is man enough, but very slow to
manoeuvre. OK for landscapes and macro but not for birds on the feeders.
Any suggestions for a decent head that is quick and easy to position and will take a 300mm Pro and EM1?

Re: Tripod Head

Have you thought of one of the smaller gimbal mounts for ease of manouvering?

Re: Tripod Head

I don't use a tripod myself but DavyG once recommended that I should try a Jobu Jr. Deluxe gimbal. I believe that is what he uses for his excellent shots with the 300mm f4.

Re: Tripod Head

I use a Lensmaster RH-2 with my EM-1 and 300 f/4.0. Absolutely love it and great for doing the bird shots you mention. It's also about the cheapest of all Gimbals.

Re: Tripod Head

A fellow camera club member picked up a Gimbal head for about £40 on Amazon. It looks good and super value.

Re: Tripod Head

Thanks guys. Since I posted my OP, I realised that I have a bowl base for my head which means that I can adjust quickly and positively. With practice I should be able to move the lens in any direction and just adjust one screw. It is a little awkward but I will try this before I spend any more money.

Having tried it, I need to think again, not enough movement with just the bowl, looks like a gimbal, but which one?

I believe Lensmaster gimbals are manufactured and marketed by GyRob, a member of this forum.

I can second this recommendation, have been using it myself for more than 5 years. I read you are using the 300 F/4, the tripod collar has an inbuilt Arca-Swiss compatible plate so no need to purchase any extra. Just make sure Rob delivers the gimbal head with an Arca-Swiss bracket/holder.

Re: Tripod Head

Olybirder suggested that I post a pic of my setup in here, so here it is.

EM 1 Mk 1 (12-40mm Pro, HDR jpeg)
Tripod is a Manfrotto 535 MPRO with a bowl base. The gimbal is the T1 from Lensmaster, works a treat, very smooth operation, looking forward to using it under fire. (Only tried it out in the garden).

Re: Tripod Head

Thanks for doing that Dave. It certainly looks the business and I like the concept of the small, independent manufacturer providing the personal touch. If I used a tripod that would definitely be top of my list. I will be interested to see how you get on with it.
