Tony Northrup Tutorial Video for E-M1 II

Tony Northrup has just posted a YouTube video tutorial for the E-M1 II. I haven't watched it all the way through yet, as it is about 1 hour 40 mins long, but he starts with the basics. Hopefully there will be plenty of useful information in it later on.

Here is the link:

Like that pain (Michael Portillo) on Great British Railway Journeys with his Bradshaw's guide? Our SBS TV channels keep showing it.

Anyhow, thanks for the hint.

EDIT: Actually Tony is absolutely fine compared to the above.

Portillo was a million times worse when he was an active politician - the new version is positively benign and cuddly in comparison!

Is there a content list with the times of the topics noted?

I compiled and posted my own version but Johnheatingman informed me that there is one beneath the video, so I have deleted it now.

Oops, I didn't click Show More, so I couldn't see it. I have deleted my list so that users can use the official one.

Re: Tony Northrup Tutorial Video for E-M1 II

How interesting - I'll have a dip in to this now.

I'm with Paul on finding TN until now irritatingly smug, superficial and prejudiced against m4/3, so that's my starting point. I shall be delighted to be proved wrong (or, rather, to see that he's raised his game to be more objective!).

He did one video a while ago that started extremely well to illustrate how depth of field and perspective varies with focal length, sensor-to-subject distance and sensor size. In fact it's by far the best illustration of these effects I've ever seen.

Unfortunately he then completely ruined it by going on to criticise all m4/3 sensors for having poor noise performance, without providing a shred of actual evidence or illustration of what he meant in real usage terms.

Anyway, my mind is open (although not to the extent that my brain is going to fall out)...

Re: Tony Northrup Tutorial Video for E-M1 II

Yeah, not bad, although he's still slimy

I dipped in to quite a bit of it and there are some errors - for example he says Pro Capture saves all the images taken while the shutter is half pressed (rather than a few, default 14 as I recall).
He also says the green dot shows it's taking shots, rather than actually showing focus has been attained.

He's over pessimistic in my experience about the ability of all-point focus tracking to follow BIF against anything other than sky - I often find it usable, and certainly so for nearer moving objects, like people walking briskly by against quite busy and crowded backgrounds. To be fair I have found I've apparently got better at using this over the weeks and months I've had the camera, so there's probably a familiarity aspect, maybe to do with the way one pans.

Otherwise I'm quite impressed.
He actually says the 75 f1.8 is "like the sharpest lens I've ever used". He even spotted the lower over-exposure headroom at Low ISO.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but I don't think he passes any significant comment about the usability of high ISO performance on this m4/3 sensor, so at least he's not now just repeating old assumptions.

So, he's obviously responding well to therapy and, yes, my brain is still in my skull.

Re: Tony Northrup Tutorial Video for E-M1 II

Tony Northrup is obviously a somewhat divisive character but I think he has produced a useful introductory tutorial video for the E-M1 II. It is not perfect and there are several errors which have been pointed out but I think it includes plenty of tips for newcomers to Olympus OM-D cameras.

I found several things which I wasn't aware of. For example, right at the beginning, he talks about the diopter setting. For years I have struggled to focus on an object while turning the diopter knob until it appears sharp. His advice is to ignore the subject and just look at the letters and numbers at the bottom of viewfinder and concentrate on getting them sharp. It worked like a dream for me. I suppose that is blindingly obvious to most people but it was a revelation for me and justified watching the video for that piece of advice alone.
