Camera Conspiracies and the EM1x

Came across this, Camera Conspiracies talks about the Oly EM1x.

Somewhat dry humour but worth a listen if you have some spare time to dream about the EM1x.

Sure it will be bigger but no were near the size / weight of my 1dx mkII so no worries from me .
CAF is the key thing for me for birds in flight .

I think that’s the point of it. And then there's the cost. A Sony 600mm f4 lens costs the best part of £10000. An optically superb Olympus 300mm f4 gives little change from £2000. The full frame DoF difference? Pull the other one! If anything, having twice the in focus area, for a given aperture, is a big advantage at that kind of tele. Add to that the Olympus kit will be far smaller and lighter, with better combined IS, and the argument is compelling.

Look up Ming Thein (specifically the recent Robin Wong stuff) for an idea about current Olympus thinking.

In my view, the DoF difference is not really about having twice as much in focus. DoF is pretty thin at those big magnifications anyway and having a bit more isn't going to cover up for any missed focus. Rather, the key difference is how the out of focus areas are rendered. The 300mm f/4 is a lovely lens, and I use it for as much as the rugby season as the light permits. But once we get into the murky days of deep winter I switch to the old 4/3 90-250 f/2.8 and I definitely think the out of focus rendering is nicer. But not nicer enough to justify lugging the extra bulk when the light doesn't demand it!

It's good to have the choice. If you have a very fat bank balance and a sherpa to carry the kit for you I'm sure a 600mm f/4 on "full frame" will produce gorgeous results. 4/3, and Micro 4/3 in particular, gives the rest of us an option to get nearly as good results in a much cheaper, smaller and lighter package.

Despite being in the apparent target audience for the E-M1X I am not convinced at the moment, because of its size. But all we have at present is rumours so I'm not going to start ranting and hyperventilating until I've had the chance to get hands-on with one.

John

Re: Camera Conspiracies and the EM1x

I understand entirely that the 300/4 is a stonking lens, but you can't compare it with a 600mm f4 FF lens for the simple reason that FF sensors will give you 2 stops better noise handling. Long lenses usually mean wildlife or sports and that means moving subjects. Fast shutter speeds are the order of the day so ISO performance as the light drops is a very important factor.

Re: Camera Conspiracies and the EM1x

Surprisingly you can claw 1 stop back in some situations and fill the frame omd mkII 300f4 / owls coming towards you / with the 1dxmkII and 600f4 mkII you often need a 1.4tc even then at 50yds or less it's going to hear the shutter and then veer off
The electronic shutter of the OMD will let you use the 300f4 without the 1.4tc as they often just keep coming towards you this gives far more opportunists to get the shot but as Paul says high ISO will lose out and for me that starts at around 800 iso then i start thinking about using the Canon but it's not as clear cut as you may think as the closer the bird the more detail you get and the OMD wins most time as it does not frighten the birds .

Re: Camera Conspiracies and the EM1x

In some situations the DSLR death rattle is a real disadvantage: for example, in September I was repeatedly prevented from getting images of impala drinking from a perfectly positioned boat by the noise of my 3 companions’ 1DxIIs spooking them.

I think they’d be banned from birding hides if they’d just been invented!

For this sort of use, the E-M1ii’s real FF competition comes from the Sony A7iii and (especially) the A9 at the pro level. Earlier Sonys didn’t have silent shutters in drive mode BTW (other than the S models, anyway).
