Exclamation Automatic “subscription”

Just discovered a £15 “subscription” charge on my credit card, from a company that I have never heard of.

It would seem that there are these “companies” using GDPR “acceptance” tick boxes to get your agreement to free trials, that then automatically change to monthly payments...

Fortunately my card company knows about them, and has put a block on any further debits from them.

Also found an email in my “spam” folder from 30 days ago, welcoming me to the “scheme”. It looked quite cleverly constructed, so as to get filtered into a spam folder...

As always a wake up call, to keep an eye out for these things.

Re: Automatic “subscription”

Has the bank refunded that initial £15 or have you lost that? (Barstewards!)

They have reimbursed me, but will take that back if the company refunds the money. Which is excellent service...

Just so I can be safe or aware of the problem, how do they get your credit card and email? Do you have to apply for something?

Re: Automatic “subscription”

I had a similar problem with an accounting software company based in Newcastle which auto-renewed my annual support and upgrade package without my knowledge. That would be bad enough but the cost literally doubled from around £960 to nearly £2,000.00 in fewer than twelve months!

The first I knew of it was when I received an invoice for the above amount with notification that monthly payments would be taken from my account. I tried every means possible of contacting the company but to no avail; they weren't listening.

I received notification that an amount of around £200 had been taken from my account, so I contacted the bank and arranged for it to be refunded. I then received a letter demanding immediate payment with the threat of court action and a visit from the bailiffs. Bring it on I said!

When I finally got to speak to a human being I was told that the companies T's & C's say that you agree to auto-renewal when taking out any Contract and that once issued, invoices cannot be cancelled - even though they had issued this particular invoice a full month before the year was up.

I had a similar experience with he RAC on the one and only occasion that I took out motor insurance with them.

Illegitimi!

Both companies eventually relented but I daresay most would be too afraid of being taken to court and would simply pay up.

That’s what I am investigating! The card company listed a lot of companies that have links with them and I have not bought anything from any of them.

I normally use PayPal, linked to a card with a very small limit, that is paid off in full every month. If I need to make a large purchase I add money to the PayPal.

The card that this company tried to use is my “over the counter” card, not my online card.

All a bit of a mystery

Re: Automatic “subscription”

Many outfits require a card number before allowing a 'free' trial. Their hope is that you forget to cancel, or that inertia prevents you from doing so, so you are tied in to some form of Contract. Amazon Prime is one such example although that is now monthly rather than annual.

Re: Automatic “subscription”

So much for having a credit card with "pay bills online" capability. I can transfer moneys online from one of my own accounts to another of my own accounts, but I declined a bank offer to enable me to do so.
I can however pay bills over the phone, purchases and energy bills etc. Thus my accounts are totally secure against unauthorised debits.
