Can't get TTL to work with FL36R & E-M1ii

Hi all - I'm a bit of a flash ignoramus if true be known but I've got the need to do some flash work tomorrow (Christmas day!). Practising this evening with my FL36R I'm struggling.

- If I set the flash to Auto then all works fine.

- If I set the flash to TTL Auto then the following happens:
  • The flash fires at full power (uber bright and long recharge)
  • The resulting shot has no flash contribution at all (it's dark)

I can only assume that the flash is pre-firing. What's going on? The camera is set to A mode, Fill-in mode, f5.6 and 1/15 sec, single shot mechanical shutter, ISO 200.

I'm sure it's worked before - really irritating!

Can only add to that confusion..............

I have found the flash only works consistently in AUTO mode. Otherwise whatever setting I use in the flash menu, results are not as expected. I think the Mk1 was better, and more predictable.

I remember having similar problems a while back and I switched to manual.

Re: Can't get TTL to work with FL36R & E-M1ii

You haven't by chance got it in the lowest head position for close ups have you? If not try these setting iso 800, manual mode, shutter between 1/125 or 1/80 f3.5-4.0 max, flash gun in ttl auto. always bounce off the ceiling or wall behind or to side. dial in more flash exp comp on the flash gun rather than the camera, its quicker that way. My own fl36r is a bit fussy sometimes, i clean the contacts and push it on and off a few times and it works okay just not very powerful hence the higher iso setting. Good luck hth.

Re: Can't get TTL to work with FL36R & E-M1ii

Good advice regards cleaning contacts, experienced same issue. Tried mine this morning, different metering modes in TTL Auto, ESP mode worked fairly consistently. Flash set to Auto works reasonably well but if time and situation allows, manual mode is solid approach.

Re: Can't get TTL to work with FL36R & E-M1ii

I have two FL36R flashes (one bought new & the other used) & one of them had issues at certain apertures so it has been retired, however, I hadn't actually tried these flashes on my E-M1 Mk II, so just for the test with the good one in TTL Auto, this is the result, which seems to not have any issues.

At f2.8 (40-150 Pro lens at close range)

At f10

Obviously the flash setting isn't in RC mode (with the camera flash selected as part of the fill), is it?
EDIT: If it is prefiring then you most likely have RC Flash Mode set to ON (camera user Menu 2).

Hope you have it sorted.

Re: Can't get TTL to work with FL36R & E-M1ii

Thanks Ross. I coped yesterday with plain Auto. Results seem OK. I'm confused why it doesn't work on TTL though. More experimentation needed I think.

PS Hope your enjoyed the Glenfiddich!

I will enjoy it thanks.

However, you didn't answer my question so I tried it myself & if RC flash mode is set to ON then it will allow normal Auto flash but if flash is set to TTL Auto then it will only operate it as a preflash (but the FL36R will not be usable as a TTL commander for triggering TTL RC enabled flashes).

I suspect yours is set to ON. Is that the case? I hope it is as it would be a simple solution.

Re: Can't get TTL to work with FL36R & E-M1ii

You also need to set RC mode on the flash. Get it to display C1 C. Beware of setting unwanted compensation.

Hi Ross - sorry, missed the question first time. I did have RC mode turned off, so whatever the problem is, it's not that.

That's a shame, because it produced the symptoms you described. Hope you find the reason & it isn't a faulty flash like one of mine or more so, hope there is no issue with the camera.

Re: Can't get TTL to work with FL36R & E-M1ii

I haven't a clue about flash so I messed up on Christmas day. I since discovered that using the little hot-shoe flash that comes with my M1/1, it only works if contrary to my norm, I use shutter priority. Setting aperture priority results in black images. Setting a shutter speed does not allow auto flash, just fill-in and others, but it works properly.

I use mine with Manual or Aperture Priority.

Are you using AP such that the shutter speed is above maximum synch speed?

Er.......I think so. But despite at least 60 years of photography, I hate flash and I don't know much about it, which is probably why I hate it......which is probably...etc.
