Eyasarcoris fabricii Woundwort Bug

This is the smallest British shield-bug. I found it, for the first time, last year. It was only on one plant, one of the Lemon Balm clumps in our garden. There, it was very shy and difficult to photograph, moving to the underside of the leaf at the least movement from me or my lens.

This was quite different. I was photographing a syrphid larva on a blackcurrant leaf*. This bug appeared on a adjacent leaf and remained in view when I started to photograph it. It almost seemed to be posing for me. I tried to get shots with a leaf in the background, so as not to lose its dark body against darkness from flash light fall-off. Fortunately, it has some pale dorsal markings which help to mimise this.

All images have been cropped.

Olympus EM-1, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro at f20, Raynox MSN-202 25 diopter, twin TTL flash, hand-held.

* The leaves were mis-shapen, bulging upwards, due to aphid activity on their undersides.

Harold

Stick Insect

Among some foliage this chap would be well hidden but on my garden hose reel he was easily spotted. [SW France]
Taken with my recently acquired 12-40mm, thanks Thomas.

That close the depth of field is so shallow.
