Yes, they're pretty common. Fold-away engines have been around for a while. There are two types - self-launching and sustainers (aka "turbos"). The difference is in their size & power. The sustainers are powerful enough to keep you in the air but not sufficiently powerful for a safe take-off. Up to recently all these engines have been piston engines with props, but it seems these little jet engines are becoming quite popular now. They have the BIG advantage that if you deploy them and the engine doesn't start (not uncommon) then they won't act like enormous air-brakes.

Re: Gliding

I guess they're the same sort of jet engine used in remote control model jet aircraft. And that is another world, see here for example.

Re: Gliding

I wonder if this enters the domain of powered flight requiring a ppl (minimum); probably not due to the 'craft not being self launching. (Micro lights operate on a permit to fly, so maybe the same regs. apply.)

Looking at the video I think I've seen more 'thrust' from my wife's hairdryer, and / or the morning after a can of baked beans.

Alas, that house is the hangar at the club in the Netherlands from where I'm buying it. Its new home will be the Bidford Gliding and Flying club:

There's a nice clubhouse & bar there!

Re: Gliding

It's German registered in The Netherlands, do you have to re-register it over here?
