Re: fiddling with ideas

For me that is too dark and lacking in detail. It is shot in very harsh light so care is needed to get details to show and without the details it does not work for me.

Re: fiddling with ideas

Whereas the barbed wire and its shadow are separated the shadow of the pipe merges with the pipe itself, making it "heavy" in comparison to the wire.

I like that you have maintained detail in the subjects, as this distinguishes them from their shadows.

Re: fiddling with ideas

It looks way underexposed to my eyes Ian
Just a bit of dodging, Levels & Shadow/Highlight and I came up with this.
The shadow areas are still way too blocked but I think it looks a bit better.
Hope you don't mind

Re: fiddling with ideas

Cheers everyone; thanks for edit Mike. Very true about the wire being too dark which I have lightened with the L/R brush. Been trying to add another edit or two but the forum will not let me add more than a 19KB psd (??). And I prefer to have only my better files on flickr after they charged the law and wouldn't let me post from a private album.

My last edit is as the original but the wire is a lighter although still a little darker than Mike's.

Thanks for the help

I always use Flickr to upload and post my own files from but for this edit of your image I used Photobucket.
Perhaps its an idea to create an account and post your edits from there.

Much, much better! (Why oh why do people feel the need to destroy a perfectly good photo' by rendering it in B&W?)

anyone can take a photo like that Jim; we should always be looking for something different or it gets awfully boring imo

But thanks for the thoughts jim

Re: fiddling with ideas

With the B&W I kept asking myself "why?" Why was the barbed wire there and what was its original function and what has happened to it.
In the colour version I could just accept it as it was and I liked the green on the pipe as a contrast to the brown of the wire.

I post on Flickr and post edits as private only I can see them but they still show when the BB code is posted.
