Virus warning

I know that verfy often we get virus warnings that are not what they seem. This is a warning to Mac users.
This thing, called "Cryptolocker" arrives, generally as a genuine-looking
payload on an email that comes, typically from a bank, or a voicemail, or a
fax. The attachment may well LOOK like "a_voicemail.mp3" whereas it is
really "a_voicemail.mp3.exe". Or it may be hidden in a .zip file.

Decent antivirus software should catch it.

What it does is to quietly go around your hard disk, encrypting your files with, basically, an uncrackable code. When it has completed its task, they send you an email, offering to sell you the key to the code - for hundreds of
pounds.

So the system, in effect, removes all that is useful on your computer (all of
"your" files, documents, pictures, music) while still keeping your computer
running.

I downloaded anti virus from here, http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products...e-edition.aspx
Did a scan and it found a voicemail that was dodgy. Cleaned it up.

Re: Virus warning

Yes, it's relevant to Windows users as well. I use Mailwasher to screen out these things before they get to my inbox, and I've always unchecked the "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Folder Options in Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) so I know exactly what I'm dealing with if I do get an unexpected attachment.

Re: Virus warning

Forgive a "newb" (on here at least) butting in - unless you have a Windows partition (either virtual or Bootcamp) then Cryptolocker at the moment can't infect a Mac as it is Windows specific. It is always a good idea to have AV on a Mac if for no other reason than to avoid forwarding viruses to your Windows friends. I usually recommend ClamXAV (also free) to clients and even friends.

Do frequent backups and never open dodgy attachments

Re: Virus warning

exe files won't affect macs. This is just scareware. Just drag the .exe file from the downloads to trash and delete it.
