Calf Sound

This is the coastline overlooking the Calf of Man at the very south of the Isle of Man.

Taken with Olympus E1 using 14 ~ 54 lens at 14 mm.

Re: Calf Sound

There's something very aesthetically appealing about this image Nigel, but I can't quite put my hand on what it is.

It could also do with some levels adjustments to bring out the sky and clouds as I feel there's significantly more detail in there than can presently be seen.

How did you process the image...?

Re: Calf Sound

Hi and thanks for the comments.

I have just uploaded a higher res version of this image which I hope you can enjoy more.

I have this as my computer wallpaper. The two points that I like are the almost visible movement of the waves, and the 'modeling light' on the headland. It was a dull day with odd shafts of sunlight, so I don't think there is a great deal to be done by way of levels, etc.

I processed it from RAW using PS CS3.

I hope you like it.

Re: Calf Sound

I do like it Nigel, it's a great image.

Here's what I alluded to and did this with a few edits in Lightroom first, then final prep in CS3. Shout if you want me to remove it...

Re: Calf Sound

What a beautiful place - the picture brings back memories of holidays in happy times long ago.

I have a load of slides somewhere taken on the Isle of Man - this was one of my favourite areas. Spanish Head, Cregneash, the Calf itself, all great places for photography - especially birds - puffins, chough, peregrine, and many others. John (the MusicMan) would love it!

Maybe I'll go back there one day...

Re: Calf Sound

It looks a lot different from a small boat in a rough sea! Wonderful place though, and great for sighting basking sharks.

Sorry John this looks over processed to me I think you've highlighted the sky at the expense of the foreground - it looks too mych like one of those old postcards .

Sorry

+1

The sea looks too blue, I remember it as being the colour of the original posting.

There used to be a cafe at the Sound in a large wooden shed. The sandwiches there (prawn, salmon, smoked salmon, etc.) and cream scones were sublime. Sadly the cafe has gone now, and has been replaced by a restaurant run by the Tourist Board or simialr. Its quite good, but nothing like that old wooden shed!

Hi John,
I do quite like your version, but it isn't how I remember it on that cold, windy October afternoon.

For me the beauty of this photograph is its subtlety, and the play of the late afternoon sunlight on the headland, rather than the double Velvia tones.

I would like to improve it, but I have been back since and have never quite pulled it off.

Re: Calf Sound

Thanks Nigel.

I understand that this isn't to everyone's taste, and I appreciate I have somewhat over-processed it, but I wanted to illustrate what can be done by pulling additional levels out of an image. OK, the image is somewhat oversaturated, but the detail in the sky has been pulled. I ought to have made it clearer I agree, but this is what I wanted to illustrate and shows what additional detail can be made to appear in post processing.

Re: Calf Sound

Hmmmm. I think somewhere half way between the two would be more appealing.

I must admit that I tend not to adjust things much in Photoshop other than basic levels, contrast and colour balance, etc. However, I do sometimes play with perspective as nothing irritates me more than badly converging verticals!

Re: Calf Sound

I've spent many a happy hour at the old wooden cafe, the crab sandwiches were fantastic as were the cakes. Tried the new place last year and the food was good but the prices were much higher and the ramshackle atmosphere of the old place has been lost. Sad

I'll be back there at the Manx GP in August

Cheers,

JohnGG

Re: Calf Sound

I might try to get across again myself this year. I cannot believe it was 21 years ago that I last rode in the MGP! The Island is still a wonderful place though.
