Talking A positive experience on talkphotography

I entered the October round of TP's Photographer of the Year Comp which was Artificial Lighting and won

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/for...d.php?t=273909

Here are all the entries:

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/for...d.php?t=264346

I'm particularly pleased as I know hardly anyone on TP and only pop on there occasionally to browse, so it feels nice to have been recognised by my 'peers'. Then again, recent month's rounds have been the subject of speculation of tactical voting so maybe I pushed to the top because no one knows me on there.

It also means I have shot up the leaderboard to joint 38th in the overall, not bad considering I have only entered two rounds this year. But I don't think I'll be overhauling our very own Janet who is currently 28th.

Only confession is... it was shot with a Nikon.

I had bought a Falcon fisheye and Nikon-4/3 adapter and couldn't get it to focus as the adapter needed a shim fitting. I borrowed my friend's Nikon to check the lens was ok first and took this. It did have a FL-36R stuck on top so a little bit of Oly was used in the making.

Go and hang your head in shame...it's the norty step for you....

Seriously though, very well done. You got my vote with a beautifully shot and imaginatively posed image. Very well deserved!

Re: A positive experience on talkphotography

Well done David, that's no mean feat as there are many good photographers on TP - regardless of other critisisms that might be made of that site. And who cares if it was shot on a Nikon? A camera is a camera and it's the photographer who counts. Congratulations.

Re: A positive experience on talkphotography

BTW I've just looked at all the entries and there was some strong competition, but I can see why yours won.

Re: A positive experience on talkphotography

@John (Zuiko) - Some excellent entries though it's a shame that both entries and number of voters appears to have dried up a little compared with the start of the year. I guess that's the nature of a POTY comp - once people see they won't be in contention overall some will drop out.

Without wanting to offend benvendetta, there is something quite gratifying about winning a competition voted for by fellow togs rather than judges (I know judges are togs too). There is a feeling the 'rules' are less rigidly appplied. In print format this didn't do too well at our most recent club comp, scoring a 17 - the judge's comment was that the lighting was too flat. I probably wouldn't disagree although is is very hard to achieve any form of directional light in a metallic tub that essentially becomes the perfect wraparound lighting you could imagine, sort of a super beauty dish.

A club comp can feel as if marks are there to be lost for minor errors rather than awarded for brave or innovative choices.

@Andy (shenstone) - Sadly this photo wasn't terribly innovative... I got the idea off of a 14 year old on flickr. I wish I had had those ideas when I was that young.
