Question Aiternative to Movie Button?

I fear I know the answer to this but am hoping a clever sleuth on this forum may have found an alternative.
On the E-M1 if the Movie Button has been allocated an alternate function, is there another way to record a movie (perhaps through the movie icon on the mode dial)?

Button assignments include Video on Fn1, Fn2, AEL/AFL & both front buttons, so you could choose one of those if desired. I would say one of the front buttons if they aren't used could be a good choice.

Re: Aiternative to Movie Button?

Sorry, no clever sleuthing from me but you've raised the question in my mind: what's the movie position on the dial for?

I don't shoot movies but would like to know if anyone uses this setting, when the red button actually controls movie operation?

Using the video button while using A or P mode allows for a quick video grab but the video mode allows for full video features access & still requires a button to start & stop recording, but then I'm NO expert on its use either.

Re: Aiternative to Movie Button?

I hardly shoot video. And there is already a Video selection on the dial, I have set the Video Button to the Digital X2.

Smile Re: Aiternative to Movie Button?

Thanks all, I too use still photography as my preference and so have fully allocated all available buttons to make quick selection depending on what type of photography I am doing. This includes allocating the red video button to Myset1 for quick return when many adjustments have been made on the fly.
(the 'C' allocations on the Mk11 would do this - but I can't justify the cost).
I had hoped that the video icon on the mode dial would work the same way as all the other 8 icons do - take a picture (or in this case start a movie)
when you press the shutter button!...but not so.

I AM WRONG!
After typing the above I gave it one more try - I should have realised Olympus comes up trumps.
If you have the red Movie button allocated to a different function in P A S M then you cannot start a movie with it, BUT if you then move the mode dial to the movie camera icon, then press the red movie button - hey presto movie recording commences! pressing the shutter button takes a still photo during the movie. Turning back to P A S M and is all as you previously left it. So much still to learn in this camera.

Re: Aiternative to Movie Button?

Very Interesting. I have yet to try taking a photograph while it's recording a movie. Gotta try that.

As long as you realise it interrupts the movie & stops that file to start a new one.

You can also change from using the red button to using the shutter button to start and stop a movie = Menu > cog icon > I Movie > Shutter Function > mode2 >OK. This avoids taking a still mid movie and causing the movie to be fragmented.
