Not heard of him before but refreshing change to hear somebody talk positive about his move to micro four-thirds and Olympus.

I was surprised this evening at local photography club to find that our visiting speaker, a bird and wildlife photographer, has almost completely switched from Canon to Oly (E-M1 II; 12-100; 300 and teleconverter; PL 100-400; still also uses Canon 500mm and teleconverters with an adapter). Main reason for switching was the weight.

Interestingly I'm not surprised. I know several serious, long term photographers who have switched to Oly and all to EM1. The common factor is that they love the smaller size factor and have seen in the club, from myself and others, prints which prove that unless you need to either crop heavily or print very big there is no problem with detail. They all comment on the low light performance and we all know that is a factor we must deal with so we have to remain realistic. If you shoot sports indoors for instance the EM1 is probably not for you.

This is why, as I said in another thread, I'm nervous about the 1X possibly being bigger as that would seem to me to throw away the most frequent reason to shift camera system to M43.

One point we and Olympus should acknowledge is that a large part of the enthusiast market is older people. They are the ones looking for less weight to carry around for obvious reasons. This fact also raises what happens when we all die off as all manufacturers need to attract a a younger market. Quite what Olympus can do about that I'm not qualified to suggest but it could be a conflicting driver.

Tricky stuff to be sure. Personally I really hope that the new camera is not bigger. Of course I am unlikely to be able to afford one so it's academic in that sense but I do want Olymps to have a good future and to continue to develope m43.

EM1X probably needs to grow in size (apart from the sensor, that is) to accommodate the extra buttons and knobs they wish to install to keep the ‘techies’ happy out there in customer land.

What comes after the EM1X, will it be the EM1X Mk2 or the EM1Y - we’re getting close to be being able to pronounce the model names... Anyone seen my emix.. or my emee

Its a bit hearsay but the OM-D E-M5 is reputed to have been the camera that saved Olympus (I refer to the camera division bit). To do that there must have been something in the concept and format that appealed. It would be a shame if this disappeared in the push to go into new markets (and bigger cameras) as these needs will not have changed.
