Fluted Bird’s Nest Fungus Cyathus striatus

You would think that such a distinctive fungus would not go unnoticed but I was the only one of a group of fungus specialists, searching for fungi, who saw this colony and at first glance I thought it was a pile of acorn cups.

Tom Hicks recently post a beautiful image of a related species and his image showed the immature stage, with membranous caps. Although I found dozens of cups, none still had these.

The cups are around 7mm across and contain various numbers of white to grey “eggs”, which are peridioles containing spores. Another common name for this species is Splash Cups, referring to the dispersal of the peridioles by rain drops. Those in my images are retained by numerous fine, anchoring threads. I don’t know if the impact of the rain breaks these or if they wither.

These were growing on wood chips, a typical substrate.

I am posting these images in two lots. Today’s shows the habitat shots and the side views of the cups. The second set with be top views and close-ups of the “eggs”.

Stereo pairs are crosseye.

Olympus EM-1, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro (plus a raynox MSN-202 for the close shots), flash (triple except for the habitat shots). Hand-held.

Harold

They are supposed to be common but this is only about the fourth time I have seen them, three of those being in the last couple of years, on fungus forays. In the 1960s I was in a field of stubble where they were all across the field. I don't know which species they were.
