Unhappy Another big loss to the UK

It's "Arts & Culture" so of interest to only a small minority, but it's still yet another loss, and diminishes the UK standing in the world.

I'm tempted to suggest that a significant percentage of those that voted 'leave' are BBC Radio 1 listeners, for whom this item of news would not be of the slightest interest!

... And probably Classic FM listeners too, many of whom have equally poor musical tastes; being content to be spoon fed with a constant diet of adagios and other 'syrupy smooth' relaxing movements chosen only to maximise listener numbers and hence advertising revenue.

Just don't mention the 'O' word or you'll be treated to the obligatory hourly performance of that wretched Toccata from Widor's 5th, which has unfortunate connections with weddings.

Then there is their orchestral version of JS Bach's Wachet auf (Sleepers Awake) which is played at such a painfully slow tempo that it would send anyone to sleep if it wasn't so awful.

Re: Another big loss to the UK

I would have thought Classic FM would have wanted to support such an orchestra, but then if it is like our ABC it has had funding cuts & programming can suffer.

I admit to having listened to Classic FM in the past, but was infuriated by their incessant playing of Rodrigo's Concierto Aranjuez - it seemed that every time I put CFM on they were playing it!

I also hated their adoption of pop disc jockeys' style eg 'and now for chart topping Ludwig Van'. Also their habit of giving the name and composer of a piece after (sometimes long after) it was played, almost as an unimportant afterthought!

Yes; Rodrigo's Concierto Aranjuez and Elgar Cello Concerto seem to be repeated on the hour, every hour, along with individual movements of Rachmaninov II and that Widor!

All of this is good music in moderation, but there is so much other good music out there which is never played. It also irritates me that they only every play the slushy movements.

I much prefer Radio 3 most of the time, as long as they are not playing one of those dreadful 'vacuum cleaner' symphonies; and by that I don't mean Dyson in F, which is quite wonderful in my view!

At least I can enjoy ABC Classic FM down-under. I'm listening to it now, but I think it was Greta Bradman (a granddaughter of cricketer Don Bradman) on earlier & as she is also a singer (soprano) it seems some of her programme includes more of that (at the moment, or just my imagination) & that isn't my favourite instrument, particularly sopranos or German tenors.

Re: Another big loss to the UK

Classic FM was at it's best just prior to them broadcasting music when they were broadcasting a test tape of birdsong all day and everyday to check out their transmitters.

A visitor from Switzerland was amused/amazed about this and still remembers the experience. The ultimate condemnation of us Brits was sitting in a car looking at the view listening to birdsong on the car radio.

Re: Another big loss to the UK

O dear Jim, that's one of my favourite pieces! It's Mozart that drives me nuts. Classic FM was good in its early days when even the ads had classical music, but now it has descended into just another commercial radio station with incessant banal ads and an obsession with charts.

Radio 1 listeners tend to be young, and I thought most young people were Remainers? Anyway, it's hardly a surprise that the EU Youth Orchestra should want to be based in an EU country!

I've listened to this online station in the past and it was excellent:

Re: Another big loss to the UK

From what I remember Classic FM introduced people to Gôrecki's Symphony No 3. This piece is a very useful demo piece as for the more humble sound systems the music is quiet for the first 20 minutes as it is played only by Double Bass and Cellos.

Often now used at Holocaust related services. The full name is "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs"

I thought you'd be listening to Dame Nellie Melba on a wind up 78!
