Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

The term pub can include the garden, the public bar as well as the lounge.

Not all pubs are riotous areas of assembly.

In a lounge one is more likely to be sitting in a specific group of people, in a pub/bar one can migrate between different groups and individuals.

Maybe we should call this new pub "The Reinvented Wheel". Seems appropriate

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

When I first joined, I sort of foresaw this 'problem'. Based on experience from the Pentax site, I suggested that a Sticky be created titled 'Just Another Pointless Thread'.
It had been going on for years and had the effect of sucking in all the non-photographic chatter we like to indulge in. So instead of having a humongous number of individual titles e.g. Should TM/Ryan Air/Microsoft/Mc Fluffies, be banned from the universe, it made a clear distinction between chat and photo stuff.

I also would agree that there are far too many sub-group Threads. Why not reduce them and have top line categories which then have sub-groups within those.

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

As a case in point, I posted a question in one of the darker corners of the forum yesterday, asking about the type of film that a regular member used. More than 24 hours later there have been no replies from anyone.

Had I posted the same question in the Lounge I daresay I would have received at least one reply before the thread was moved to a more appropriate place.

I accept this doesn't justify posting anything and everything in the Lounge, but it does help to explain why people do, especially newbies, and even more especially those who need a quick answer to a pressing photographic problem.

Actually Nigel, you asked a question aimed at a specific member about the film he used. The post in question you responded to was 3 weeks old and the member in question has not visited the forum for 3 weeks since.

As your post was aimed specifically at a particular member it's hardly surprising nobody else responded.

So whether your post was in the "darker corners" or the Lounge, I suspect the result would be the same.

I rest my case

Yes that is a fair point, and I fully accept the question was aimed at a specific member.

But I would still maintain that had the same question been asked in the same way in the Lounge there would have been at least one reply, even if from somebody else, and not answering the specific question.

My point is that to many people, especially newbies, the darker corners of this forum seem a bit like a black hole, so why would you post a burning question in them?

All the discussion and concern over posting the correct topics in the Lounge seems a tad ironic anyway. There are 2 "Black Holes" where incorrect topics have been posted since last May, E-System User Group goodies and E-group equipment hire for example. I guess these are not busy boards so maybe nobody is too concerned.

Does anyone "really" care if "photography topics" get posted there ?

What is really needed is two lounges, or a split one, one for photography subjects (there is currently no clear place for non-hardware/non-software photgraphy subjects) and one for other subjects.

However, how can anyone be upset by the current mix? There is no obligation to read topics of no personal appeal.

Harold

So what do you think this is, Harold?

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

Well, if you go into a café and ask the proprietor to talk about the noise characteristics of an EM-10 Mark III at ISO 3200 you might get an odd response, wouldn't you? I guess some care, some don't. I'd rather cater for those that do care.

The Lounge was set up with the express intention of providing a home for chat that is not related to the core raison-d'etre of the site, which is focused on Olympus system cameras.

We have been a bit lax in managing this and now we're gently sorting this out.

While the Lounge is for non-photography topics, it's not a black and white (pardon the photography term!) rule; of course you can use photos to illustrate a discussion and why not make a camera reference? But the overriding topic ought to be about something not dependent on photography.

If in doubt, go ahead and feel free to post in the lounge with confidence. If the mods think a thread should really be somewhere else on the forum, we'll politely move it.

I really don't know how simpler or smoother I can make this.

Ian

You would get a similar response if you phoned Amazon or eBay for advice on the subject, but that doesn't stop the unthinking masses from buying cameras from them.

(And no; you can't call the seller because Amazon / eBay doesn't allow you to. )

Personally it doesn't bother me if photographic subjects are posted in the Lounge, but there has to be some kind of order. If 'everything' was posted in the Lounge it would become like Facebook, with threads disappearing within a few hours, and the same tired old questions being asked over and over again.

I do believe there is scope for some rationalisation of the forum, especially where older models are concerned, but the present format makes it a lot easier to search for questions similar to your own than if everything were lumped in together.

I get the idea Ian - and I do "care" - I was trying to gauge interest.

Regarding your "Cafe Analogy" - it's not quite the same is it ? - however if it was a "Photographers Cafe" then it would be but of course I'd actually expect to be able to discuss cameras with the Proprietor and customers

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

It was a while ago but I am sure one of the reasons for implement an off-topic area was because non-photo chat was mixing with on-topic threads and this was a bit annoying.

The bottom line is, I'd appreciate it if everyone could post in the most relevant board, I think it's the most sensible thing to do and we'll help you when we need to.

Ian
