Given that the rumours say it's targeted at photo enthusiasts I'd hope for something less boring than that.

Re: New lenses coming

Lovely lenses no doubt but I can't see these ousting my (7.5, 12,) 17, 25 and 45 primes which sit very nicely together with my Pen-F in a relatively compact ThinkTank Retrospective.

I too would be more interested in a Pro Macro 1:1 with double or more the focal length of the current 60 mm. I kind of miss my old Sigma 150 f/2.8 macro occasionally, that was great for subject separation (from the objective).
And it would also be handy if it worked with the MC-14 too, now that would oust the 60 mm in my other bag

I obviously need to be educated re stop values.

I always imagined they were arithmetical, ie 5.6 is half of 2.8, and thus 1.2 is slightly less than half of 2.8.

Be a good topic for a thread, as it will allow us mortals to evaluate a lens and its true speed...........

Great phots in your last thread..........

The sequence for full stops is 1.00, 1.4, 2.00, 2.8, 4.00, 5.6 etc. Therefore an f1.2 lens is 2.5 stops brighter than an f2.8 lens. Wide open in dim light, if you was getting a shutter speed of 1/15th second @ f2.8, the brighter lens would allow a speed of around 1/80th - a significant advantage for avoiding camera shake or subject movement. Equally important for artistic purposes, the f1.2 lens has a much shallower dof.

I have a similar set of primes Hew but I must say that the look of images from the 25/1.2 do seem a little special. Sometimes I think I might just sell the 12, 17, 25 and my Sigma 30/1.4 and replace them all with the 17/1.2 and 25/1.2. I have 12mm covered with my Panasonic 7-14 so I wouldn't be losing anything really and the overall weight won't be hugely different. However, that f1.2 and the top-quality optical designs that they are will deliver something extra.

Something to ponder...

Re: New lenses coming

Yes no doubt they are tempting but most of the time I find my 'small' primes get the job done with f/2 to f/1.8 available. Of course these new primes may not require the degree of distortion correction that the smaller slower primes require but for me it's just that size increase that's the turn off.
I can accept my Pro zooms being larger just because they're zooms (and weather and dust sealed).

Re: New lenses coming

I guess there is loads of photographers who will think these new lens's are the bees knees.

Good luck to them.

But in the end, its a good eye and artistic flare that makes a good shot.

But of course we all need to be up with technology, even only to feel its not something you need...........

Re: New lenses coming

Well, they're here and they look fantastic. Like the 25mm f1.2, they are big and heavy for Micro Four Thirds though.

Re: New lenses coming

Re pricing wonder if the new additions will reflect a similar ratio to the current range, i.e the 45mm being about 56% cheaper than the 17mm and 25 mm sat in the middle 19% cheaper.

17mm - 1300
45mm - 730

I can imagine the 45mm being the exception to the rule and being closer to 1k to maximise profits.

Re: New lenses coming

Oly announcement has them priced the same - "165,000 Yen plus tax":

https://www.olympus-global.com/news/2017/nr00630.html

Not sure what this will turn into in UK prices, or what realistic availability dates will be.

1183 according to exchange rate. Ouch. Thats one huge leap from the current 45mm.

Re: New lenses coming

They will be stunning performers but the size a price will mean they will not be mainstream for m4/3rds users.

Re: New lenses coming

Yup more stuff aimed at Pros and those with very deep pockets.
Olympus seem to be targetting this market more which as a hobby photographer is a little disappointing.

I guess at $1200 each I'll have to live without “feathered bokeh” and stick with the f1.8 45mm and my f1.8 17mm.
Some more stuff and some Olympus videos introducing them here.

Re: New lenses coming

I am happy with the range of glass that I have at the moment and see no need for these new fast Pro primes. I prefer the slower versions that I have as they sit nicely on my Pen F and are far better value IMO. Any future purchases may include one of the other slower primes or maybe the 12-100 Pro, which seems like a great 'one lens does it all' solution.

Well I've been looking forward to the 17/1.2 and at $1199 US price I thought they'd pricing it realistically. That's just over 900 at current /$ exchange rates and about 1100 after 20% VAT is added.

BUT - Olympus have decided to screw us Brits and sell it at 1299. That's almost 20% above the US price. ********! No wonder the grey import market is so active.

Hopefully there will be some who want the latest and best and will want to sell their almost latest and almost best to fund it, and we'll get a buyer's market in 1.8 primes. (Just as we've had a buyers' market for original E-M1 since the launch of the E-M1 II)
