Mapping/ aeriel photos

Being driven mad this evening, nothing unusual but need help.....

I have been taking aerial photos of a site with the drone. the site is too big for one photo, so have taken a mosaic of photos, about 50 or so.

I am trying to knit them together with software, LR6 kinda gives up, and Image Composite editor tells lies.

Composite so far, but there are several vital phots missing, and they will not be added despite adequate common coverage.

Any suggestions for a good programme to do the biz will be appreciated...

The Image Compositer Editor did the trick in the end. I just built up the composite gradually stopping if errors were occurring. There is slight glitch in top RH corner, but I have spent enough time on it now....

Total of 50 images...……….

Re: Mapping/ aeriel photos

Well done.

I once stitched two photos together in photoshop (actually photoshop elements 12) which were taken from a moving train so from slightly different angles. It was a matter overlaying them with a 50% transparency set so I could see through them and using the free transform tool to partition the top image into strips and gradually skew the picture into the shape I wanted. I wouldn't do it for a large number of images but it might be worth trying something like this on your top right hand corner.

Thanks for that. I did try to use Photoshop, but I am not competent at using it.
I got as far as cutting and pasting photos, but the brightness of the pasted image was more than the base photo. So the several pasted images looked dreadful. Just my incompetence though. So I restarted the composition, combining a few photos at a time. Quite pleased with it.

As a retired land surveyor, it brought back memories and surveying urges!!

Re: Mapping/ aeriel photos

I have had more success with ICE than with PS on several occasions.

For a 3x3 composition I did the top 3 into 1, then the middle 3, then the bottom 3, and then put the 3 composite strips together to make a single square.

Hi Jim. Yes, almost in the middle with two other people. But this low res image barely shows us. The hi-res shows us well. The Mavik was flying at 100 metres....

Impressive image Mark, bet the original size is huge. Where is this strange place and why did you want an aerial shot?

Re: Mapping/ aeriel photos

Thanks Phill. The whole area is approx. 350 by 415 metres, some 14Ha.

Asked by WWT Llanelli to photo this lake whilst the water level is at its highest for some time. I am a volunteer there, and its a great pleasure to use the Mavik drone constructively. Avoiding both Heathrow and Gatwick of course...

I've stitched several composites of 6 to 10 images from moving ships using ICE. All handled automatically, the only significant error being on a join that was 80% water & 15% sky - not leaving it much to go on.

Given it's free definitely worth trying before spending time with photoshop.

Re: Mapping/ aeriel photos

Thanks Mike for that. In the end I have used ICE [Image Compositer Editor].

It has quite a few tweaks in it that I was unaware of, setting rows and columns etc. Its far more that just a panorama software. I think the problem is in a photograph or two. Maybe the drone was not hovering horizontally when I took the photo. Thus a single (or several) phots might have been distorted a bit.

Anyway, job done and a reasonable result. I must spent time understanding the ICE tweaks when I have a hour to spare,,,
