Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Insect alert:

Cinnabar Moths are now loitering near to Ragwort.

Rosemary Beetles are now congregating on Rosemary plants (tending to favour one plant and ignore others) and may also be found on Lavender.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Well two wonderful shots of quite unpleasant looking things. Not sure what it is or where beatletorque found his flying insect (dragonfly?) but it looks prehistoric...and rattly.

And I'm pretty good with spiders but always avoid those with yellow markings. And having paused to look her up I find that is wise. The zig zag web lines are great. Super shot.

Turnip Sawfly : with Gender Issues

This wasp is quite common on foliage in my garden but only mostly as single individual. They are fairly approachable with a camera but tend to walk around quite a lot. So finding this one on the edge of a leaf for long enough to shoot a stereo pair was a rare treat.

Its life can be complicated:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnip_sawfly

Olympus EM-1, Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, 1/100 at f10, sunlight, hand-held.

The images are uncropped.

The stereo is crosseye.

Hairy-footed Bee in Flight

As I mentioned in an earlier topic, these bees move around very rapidly. On this occasion, they were feeding on nectar in these deep flowers. Several times, I pressed the shutter release the moment one had backed out and was clearly visible. Every time, the image showed the bee feeding on the next flower. This one must have paused slightly on its approach.

Olympus EM-1, Olympus 4/3 x2TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, 1/60 f11, sun, hand-held.

Note the extended tongue.

Harold

Some photos from yesterday at home, a bank or Cosmos flowers next to the tennis court and I was able to sit on step next to them.

Bee-fly at Rest with Stereo

Bee-flies tend to rest on surfaces other than flowers so this was a good opportunity for a stereo pair.

Olympus EM-1, Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 f2 50mm macro at f10, sunlight.

The stereo is crosseye. The small intrusion of green leaf is unfortunate but the 3D effect is good.

Damselfly at Rest on Weigela Flower

The single frames have been cropped, the stereos have not. The stereos are crosseye.

Olympus EM-1, Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro,1/200 to 1/100sec at f11, sunlight, handheld.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

I saw my first Swallowtails of the year at Strumpshaw Fen today. Four immaculate, freshly emerged specimens were feeding on nettles in the sunshine. Always a lovely sight.
