What did you buy on Black Friday?

First, let me get the rant out of the way .... I have never been email-spammed by as many vendors as I have this last few days, all pushing their 'Black Friday' deals down my throat. To the point where I'm utterly sick of the whole, made-up, foreign, commercial, money-grubbing event. ENOUGH, already! The pending arrival of Christmas shopping is bad enough, we don't need to suffer it in November as well.

OK, rant over.

Did anybody actually buy anything as a result of this remorseless commercialism? I know I didn't. Did anyone bag what they consider a bargain? Or was it all a lot of fuss over nothing?

Re: What did you buy on Black Friday?

Hi MargaretR!

I have been supporting "Buy nothing Friday" instead. The more these people try to cram commercialism down my throat, the more I rebel. Nineteen hours in and I've not entered a shop or spent a penny on line.

Cheers,

Ralph.

Re: What did you buy on Black Friday?

Went to "spend a little - live a lot" Aldi to do some regular shopping. No Black Friday there as far as I could tell although I did buy 3 bottles of Champagne for a tenner each of which one might get cracked open tomorrow instead of a bottle of red wine.

Re: What did you buy on Black Friday?

Aldi were notably not participating, and I understand Asda, which started the whole mess a couple of years ago thanks to their parent Walmart, weren't doing it this time either. One can only hope the whole thing will die a natural death...!

I should confess, I did buy something today ... A string of tinsel from Poundland, as a prop for a Christmas shot. Just call me the last of the big spenders....

Re: What did you buy on Black Friday?

I thought it was just me who dislikes this Black Friday concept..but.

I have to confess I did buy something a Android Tablet to act as a remote control for my EM1 as the new OIShare is not supported by my phone. Boy was that an ordeal. I went into Curry's and Argos looking at all the options. I ended up going back and forth then decided to take the plunge in Curry's, saw the device I wanted, could not pick one from the shelf so had to wait for an assistant who proceeded to want to sell me virus software. Not sure which bit of no thank you he did not understand. I said I just want to buy that one, so another assistant got one from a locked cupboard and handed it to him. He then handed me a bit of paper with the product number on it and asked to to join a line with 3 guys on computers processing others purchases. After 10 mins of no movement in the line I asked an assistant if I could just pay for it at a till. No I had to join the line. I watched these guys on the pc's taking all sorts of details from their customers. I just gave up put the form down on a table and walked out having been asked if there was a problem and I said yes I just can't be bothered with their Black Friday deals. I was going to spend 80. I went home and found a much better device for my needs at 45 and ordered it online, OK I have to wait for delivery but at least I am not in a line.

They might try and sell it described as that but it slows down any OS so as far as I am concerned it is virus software.

Re: What did you buy on Black Friday?

I did well - today I needed some more Guatemala Elephant coffee which I buy from Whittards by mail order, and today it had a good discount (due to the BF) next week it may have a discount due to another issue.

Re: What did you buy on Black Friday?

I did browse the offers on Amazon looking for a Christmas present for SWMBO, but the only thing that caught my eye was an SSD drive for the PC

I do hope she likes it

Re: What did you buy on Black Friday?

I got a Lexar Professional 800x Speed (120 MB/s) UDMA 7 CompactFlash Memory Card - 32 GB 24.99, a lenshood to replace the one I lost in Ireland, 12.99 and a Remote shutter release for my EM-1, 5.99.

I wanted a Canon 7D MK 2 but even with money off, it was too expensive, SWMBO would not let me sell a grandchild.

Sorry Alf, but you're wrong!

The English should celebrate Thanksgiving on the 6th September, the date we got rid of the Pilgrim Fathers!

Edit: dependant on which website you read, it appeared to leave again 10 days later on the 16th! TWO celebrations!

Re: What did you buy on Black Friday?

What is about "black" which is supposed to be so attractive?

I brings to mind the ISIS flag.

Re: What did you buy on Black Friday?

I ignored it!

It's all part of the insidious creeping Americanisation (Americanization as it will soon be spelled!) of this country, like Halloween and the promotion of American 'football' (you know, the game a bit like rugby, except that they wear protection so they don't get hurt and play on 'carpet' so their pretty outfits don't get dirty!)
