I remember (fondly?) when, in my first few days after leaving school (we didn't have Universities up North, at least, not for Northerners) as a trainee in the QC lab at t'mill, I was sent to the stores for a long stand.

Fortunately, my father had forewarned me of this and other japes which were practiced on small boys on their first days at work, and so I spent a pleasant afternoon wandering the canal which bordered the mill.

Upon my eventual return to the lab, I received a severe bollocking, sorry, dressing-down.

In my absence they had been forced to send someone else for the piece of laboratory apparatus which for all the world looked like a tall tripod, which held a strange glass orb used for distilling oil from yarn.

That piece of apparatus was known as a "long stand".

That and 3/4 inch screw holes were another favourite along with water hammers to be fetched from the stores.
