Thumbs up The Big, Bumper Jubilee Thread

We have ahead of us a four day weekend and bank holiday to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. There will be events and festivities right across the country to mark the occasion, spread over all four days. Wherever you live there are bound to be events to photograph right on your doorstep, so I thought it would be great to start a Jubilee thread where all those pictures can be posted. Let's see if we can make this the longest thread on E-System User Group! I've posted it now so you can think ahead about which events you can cover and I'll bump it again if necessary as a reminder towards the end of the week.

Wow, that will have to go some to beat the OM-D delivery date thread! So here's a cheeky one to start the count!

Re: The Big, Bumper Jubilee Thread

We actually have a friend from London coming to stay with us - well, Heathers friend actually. We met a smashing family while on holiday in Sharm el Sheikh three years ago, and we have stayed in contact. Laura (17 yrs old now) has visited and stayed with us before, and we are welcoming her this weekend too. She arrives on the train on Friday evening. So... I have promised her a few portrait shots akin to the ones I usually do, and I know we're off out somewhere over the weekend and Bank Holiday subject to the weather, so I'll try to remember to grab some Jubilee type shots if I can and post them here.

Good idea John.

I am sure HM would approve of your idea John!
We are getting quite a bit on the TV about the Jubilee.

We aren't allowed to take Bank Holidays, unless it's taken out of our normal holiday allowance. So it's work as usual.

Question Re: The Big, Bumper Jubilee Thread

I'll start the ball rolling with this one, taken just a couple of weeks ago when HM the Queen, along with the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles visited my local canal as part of the Jubilee tour.

I was so close to her that I couldn't get the camera to focus in time for a head on shot. It didn't help that my hands were shaking also....I'm not a fervent Royalist, but it really was a proud day for our town and it was SUCH a privilege to have all three senior Royals there at the same time.

...and this one, where I was almost mown down by the Royal car!

I particularly like this one, as the Police escort guy spotted it on my Flickr site and asked for a copy...I've since been able to give him and the rest of his team a full set of images from the day, which they are delighted with.

This is however my favourite from the day...

He'd just spotted me, sat cross legged on top of a wall looking like a gnome, with two cameras slung round my neck. He pointed me out to Prince Phillip and they both turned and waved at me...unfortunately I was too busy waving back to take a photo and the moment had passed. I know Prince Charles gets a lot of stick at times, but I really have immense regard for him for all the time and effort he is putting into our town.

Following the visit, he announced his intention to set up a permanent base for the Prince's Trust right here...he's visited us on several occasions over recent years and has constantly expressed his fondness for the place and his commitment can be clearly seen in the regeneration that is going on.

After listening to politicians promising the earth and then doing nothing, it's refreshing to find someone who puts his money where his mouth is and actually delivers!

I've heard lots of negative comments about the Jubilee celebrations but you won't get any from me! It's a time for us to celebrate all that's best about being British, so I look forward to seeing many more photos from the occasion on here.

Rule Britannia!!

Janet

Janet, thanks for posting some of your brilliant photos from your other thread, they really help to set the scene and get this thread off to a flying start!

Even Scottish holidays? Seems a bit mean!

Only Christmas day and Boxing day. We are classed as Agricultural workers (!) and as such all public holidays are incorporated in our annual holiday allowance. So that the hens don't go unmilked and we can collect the eggs from the bulls.

Do you sell the bulls' eggs to the garden centre?

Ciao ... John

So I guess things depend on what your holiday allowance is!

Good on ya, Janet. They're a lovely set of photos.

I guess I could say I've sent my daughter across to represent the family (arrived in London this morning) for the occasion, but the real reason was to be with her (English) boyfriend & family, in between her uni studies, but she is also looking forward to hopefully seeing something of the Jubilee while she is there too.

Edit: I didn't read the above posts before I wrote mine. Sorry to bring a little seriousness to the frivolous posts above.

Well, someone needed to get this thread back on topic!

Never mind, the more this thread deviates in between the serious business the longer it will get.

I thought Bank Holidays were enacted by acts of Parliament, and therefore you are entitled to them by statute. Nobody can legally deprive you of your entitlement to them - not even a Laird!

Depends what it says in your contract of employment.
