B&H Photo

Saw this store in New York city, two floors and each was enormous!

Had enlargers, paper and darkroom kit.

Even had seats for your spouse to use.

Re: B&H Photo

I've seen plenty of photos of men looking bored waiting in clothes shops, but here we have a photo of women looking bored waiting in a camera shop

Re: B&H Photo

It's a fascinating place Dave with everything being delivered by a conveyer system, if that's not changed. I visited in 2008 but didn't think to take any images. Too busy worrying about how much I'd spent and how I was going to explain it when I got back to the hotel The other thing I noticed was the number of people I saw in the street as I got nearer the store with B&H bags. I didn't need to ask for directions.

Re: B&H Photo

I agree, this could be the best photo/camera store in the world. Their web shop is also very good. Bear in mind the business is closed Saturdays if you plan to make a visit.

The first interior shot reminds me of Fishwicks at Newton Le Willows, if anyone remembers it?

Re: B&H Photo

I've been to NY several times for work and always make a point of visiting... I arrived there early on a Sunday morning and there was a massive queue waiting for it to open!

Re: B&H Photo

They do mail order, but I've never considered them as the UK HMRC will sting you for duties and VAT if they spot the package coming in to the country. This makes their good looking prices become effectively more expensive than buying at home.

Ffordes has a tea shop and gallery downstairs where the other halves wait while the 'togs mull over a prospective purchase upstairs.

Just occasionally it's still been worthwhile me buying from them, even factoring in duties etc. Usually for something you can't get in the UK.

Re: B&H Photo

Out of interest, just how much extra as a percentage did you end up paying to HMRC and the carrier? Like you I've spotted odd things that are hard to get in the UK on their sites.

It's quite a few years ago, I really can't remember. But I seem to recall that B&H have a system where you pay duties and taxes up front and they pay HMRC direct. So you can see at a glance what it's costing and it just flies through Customs.

If I ever go to New York I shall definitely go there. I fear it would be an expensive visit though.

Re: B&H Photo

Thanks Dave for showing these - they really interested me as I purchased a lens from them, so it was good to see the store.
Amazingly they posted me their catalogue which was HUGE, more a book than a catalogue. I was impressed that with a small order like mine, that they bothered.
