Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

If we were voting them in or out every few months can you imagine the cost and the voter apathy that would ensue! Love the idea but worry it couldn’t be made to work. The cost of democracy is sky high already without adding multiple extra elections into the system. How about when the MP who doesn’t deliver on his promise is turned out then the one that came second would automatically get the job? That might keep ‘em on their toes.
Saying that I’ve no faith or confidence in any of them any more.

Don't they still operate some sort of Feudal System including Prima Nocta, in 'Deepest Darkest Dorset' Tim?

Jim
I thought “Prima Nocta” was a 50mm f/0.85 Lens...

Yes, lots of feuds in Dorset. We’ve even got Prince Charles personal Toy Town in Dorchester, plus of course the annual Knob Throwing competition.

I didn’t realise John had been banned until I tracked the posts back last night. I miss John, even though we often had opposing political views and his banter could at times be challenging. However, when I first joined this forum and the other one, he was very kind and supportive. I liked the guy. Hopefully his time out is not permanent.

After todays news, it looks like crashing out of the EU is really on the cards.

Just what is the solution to the Irish border? Neither remainers nor leavers have voiced an acceptable solution.

If there is not a hard border, which I am not saying there should be, it leaves the UK with our back door wide open. Immigration would be difficult to police, and goods are going to be complicated to manage.

Almost sounds though the EU solution is the best of a bad job.

I was recently on holiday in Ireland. The talk with the locals was all about Brexit. When the troubles finished, the IRA headed south and they are still there, quietly bubbling away and if there was a hard border, it wouldn’t take much to stir them back up. Bad times not to be revisited.

What’s wrong with the solution being proposed by the UK?

If that’s the Chequers proposals, what is good about some of the U.K’s - EU laws still being under control by the EU. I don’t expect you to answer as you did not write the draft

As said, immigration will be difficult, which was one of the main reasons people voted to leave. Any Tom Dick or Harriet will just be able to walk in, like they do now. But I suppose they will then be illegal immigrants, and we will have to build huge detention centres to process them back from where they came.

Goods etc solution I believe is to have a computer/paperchase. Whilst its possible, it will be some time to get the system to work. SOME being several years I imagine...……..

Another potential for a UK Gov IT cock-up, probably outsourced to the like of Crapita, who will make millions off of the taxpayer and still the system won’t work properly. Utter nightmare in prospect.

There is a possible compromise on the border. It can be a hard one but with a foot gap beneath, so that The Little People can come and go as they please.

Seriously, a threat of immigrants from across The Irish Sea is not comparable with one from the massed migrant wannabees on the other side of the narrow Channel and short Tunnel. If we have survived the high level of immigration, legal or illegal, during our decades of EU membership, we are hardly likely to have much of a problem from a possible trickle from Ireland.

Well you may be right. Not against immigration at all, but we do need to selective I think. The joke would be that any potential immigrant will most likely have had to cross UK to get to Ireland, then legally (ish) walk across that border. Humanity

I went to Moorfields eye hospital in London today for my monthly eye injection for age related wet macular degeneration. I was seen by five nurses, an optometrist and a doctor - a mixture of nationalities, none of them from the U.K.. Both the receptionists were not from the U.K. either. Without immigrants Moorefields would be turned over as a hostel for the homeless!
