What is the location of a photo?

I always tag my shots with the location, but something has been bugging me for ages. If I take a shot of Gateshead across the river from Newcastle, do I tag the photo as being "Newcastle" or "Gateshead"?
My first thought is to tag it as "Gateshead", because that's what the shot is. But if I'd used GPS tagging via either an on-board GPS or a smartphone sync thing, the photo would have been tagged as "Newcastle". In this case I'd always plump for "Gateshead". It makes sense, doesn't it?

And what if the shot is a large-vista landscape? There isn't really a definable location that's the subject, so the only thing that would make sense would be where the shot was taken from.

Thoughts anyone?

Re: What is the location of a photo?

I would go for the "subject" location, in much the same way as it's the picture that you look at and admire, and not so much the process that produced it.

However many like to know the exact location of the tripod indentations, so that they can take the same shot...

Re: What is the location of a photo?

If I took a picture of the moon I would tag it "moon" but I wouldn't put that as the photo location.

To be awkward - if it's a shot from Newcastle of Gateshead I would probably add tags for both in Flickr.
If I were setting the location on the map in Flickr I'd do what geotagging in the Olympus app does and flag the place I took the picture from.

With the large vista landscape there can be plenty of places to tag but only one location it was shot from.

Re: What is the location of a photo?

Ideally I suppose you'd always tag both "Subject "and "Camera Location", but in the Exif definition there's only the camera location and that's what Flickr expects when you add a geolocation to your shot. It's a load of cobblers really.

I think I'll stick to macro work

Ah well I don't put anything in the EXIF the camera (or app) didn't add apart from Copyright info.

Re: What is the location of a photo?

Fortunately, I never suffer this type of problem with tagging photos. All mine have the same location tag....... "Back Garden".

Re: What is the location of a photo?

It's just so I can find the photos in my Lightroom catalog, I was going to try and use LR's map facility. I'd never find anything if I didn't use keywords & stuff.

I've just noticed that the Exif fields do allow for the "Subject" location, it's just that they call it "Destination", which is a weird name for it.
